- Strong research background and experience in corrosion science, aqueous corrosion of materials, electrochemistry and or, environmental assisted cracking, is preferred
- Ability to plan and build lab capabilities as well as ability to perform independent lab work, while collaborating effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proven track record of peer-reviewed publication(s) and/or technical reporting in corrosion science, materials degradation, or closely related fields
- Strong oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications / Experience
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with electrochemical corrosion testing techniques (e.g., EIS, potentiodynamic polarization, LPR, or equivalent)
- Experience with materials characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, or similar).
- Experience in working with autoclaves containing high temperature pressurized aqueous media.
- Laboratory instrumentation setup, calibration, and preventive maintenance
- Data analysis and visualization using Python, MATLAB, or equivalent tools
- Scientific writing and technical documentation
- Familiarity with relevant industry standards (e.g., ASTM, ISO, NACE/AMPP standards) for corrosion testing and evaluation
What you will do
The postdoctoral researcher will leverage their strong technical background in corrosion science to support developing materials solutions for ExxonMobil’s Upstream and Low Carbon Solutions businesses.
The successful candidate is expected to:
- Design and execute experimental programs to investigate corrosion mechanisms, degradation kinetics, and the influence of environmental variables (e.g., temperature, pH, electrolyte chemistry, stress state).
- Perform advanced electrochemical testing such as potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), linear polarization resistance (LPR), zero-resistance ammetry (ZRA), and cyclic voltammetry
- Apply complementary characterization techniques — including SEM/EDS, XRD, XPS, and optical profilometry — to analyze corrosion products, pit morphology, and surface chemistry.
- Publish and present work in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, supported by a standard internal review process that protects intellectual property and confidential business information while enabling timely dissemination of scientific results.
What role you will play in our team
- As a post-doctoral researcher, you will work in close collaboration with principal investigators and technology portfolios, contributing to the technical direction and execution of the research program(s). You will also forge connections with external collaborators — including industry partners, national laboratories, and academic consortia
- Serve as a researcher in an aqueous corrosion focused research program driving experimental design, setting quality standards for data collection, data generation and interpretation, and reporting.
Duration
This opportunity is for a postdoctoral position expected to last one to three years, subject to annual review and renewal.
