What role you will play in our team

  • ExxonMobil (China) Investment Co., Ltd. (“ExxonMobil”) is seeking to hire an attorney with strong transactional experience for its legal team in Shanghai, China.  The attorney will work with a team of experienced lawyers to support ExxonMobil’s businesses in China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan), South Korea and Japan on a wide variety of transactional, commercial, labor, regulatory and manufacturing operational matters, including but not limited to, advising on regulatory issues (e.g., PRC National Standard, labeling requirements, trade laws and technology import/export, customs related matters including investigation, brand protection, anticorruption and antitrust compliance); the negotiation, drafting and implementation of agreements (e.g. distribution, reseller, warehousing, procurement, joint venture agreements) and supporting goods and services contracts (disputes related to product delivery, product allocation, product contamination, and debt recovery).  The attorney will also manage anti-dumping, safeguard and other trade related actions and supporting regulator advocacy.  The attorney will work closely with assigned clients, often on a daily basis, with oversight from more experienced attorneys where required. 

What you will do

  • Provide day-to-day legal support for ExxonMobil business units, developing relationships with key business leaders to drive positive business results;
  • Support and lead a wide range of commercial transactions;  
  • Draft, review and negotiate commercial agreements, customer and supplier agreements, project-related agreements; and goods and services contracts;
  • Conduct and coordinate research into a variety of legal issues, providing legal analysis and counsel to business leaders that anticipates and helps mitigate legal risks;
  • Work closely with other teams in the ExxonMobil Law Department, other ExxonMobil functional groups (e.g., tax, regulatory, and finance functions), and business lines;
  • Provide regulatory support on issues described above;
  • Interface with outside counsel on certain transactions, regulatory matters, and disputes.

About you

Skills and Qualifications

  • Law Degree from an accredited law school;
  • Strong college and law school record;
  • Qualified to practice law in China;
  • Strong transactional/corporate law background; 
  • Strong legal research, analysis and writing skills; 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant legal experience, must have two (2) and more years law firm experience with a major law firm;
  • High ethical standards and integrity; 
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to exercise sound business judgment; 
  • Ability and desire to work independently and as a member of an integrated team; 
  • Able and willing to travel domestically and internationally in support of client transactions as needed;
  • Working language requirement: Chinese and English.

 Preferred Qualifications/ Experience

  • Transactional experience in the petrochemical and/or energy industry; 
  • Experience managing legal compliance issues (e.g., antitrust, anti-corruption and trade law matters); 
  • Experience with a MNC corporate legal department;
  • Demonstrated record of leadership and initiative 
  • Other foreign language proficiency is a plus
