What role you will play in our team

 

We are seeking experienced and safety-focused Heavy Equipment Technicians to join our team at Kearl Oilsands operations. This Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) role operates on a 14/14 rotation and is ideal for individuals with strong diagnostic and repair experience in the oilsands mining environments, specifically working on Caterpillar(CAT) heavy equipment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing a diverse fleet of mining equipment to ensure optimal performance and reliability in a fast-paced production environment.
In addition to strong diagnostic and repair capabilities, the successful candidate will have demonstrated experience coordinating work, mentoring others, building effective working relationships, and positively influencing team performance. They are recognized by peers for their initiative, communication skills, and ability to lead by example while contributing to a respectful, inclusive, and high-performing work environment.

 

Key Accountabilities

 

  • Perform inspections, diagnostics, troubleshooting, repairs, and preventive maintenance on CAT mining equipment, including haul trucks (797, 793, 789, 785), dozers (D6, D8, D10, D11), and graders (16M, 24M) and a variety of other support equipment in a heavy mining environment.
  • Complete preventative maintenance and component replacements in accordance with OEM standards.
  • Utilize diagnostic tools, service manuals, and schematics to identify and resolve equipment issues.
  • Accurately document work performed, parts used, and labour hours in maintenance systems.
  • Adhere to all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with operations and maintenance teams to minimize downtime and improve equipment availability.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment in both field and shop settings.
  • Mentor apprentices and provide technical guidance to peers.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and actively support continuous improvement initiatives.
     

About You

  • Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician(or equivalent certification)
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in oilsands or large-scale mining operations.
  • Proven experience working on CAT equipment, specifically:
    • Haul Trucks: 797, 793, 789,785
    • Dozers: D6,D8, D10, D11
    • Grader: 16M, 24M
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
  • Experience with hydraulic, electrical, and powertrain systems
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s license
  • Ability to work in extreme weather and demanding site conditions.
  • Strong commitment to safety and teamwork.
  • Professional & Leadership Attributes:
    • Demonstrated experience coordinating maintenance activities or leading work groups.
    • Experience mentoring apprentices, developing technicians or providing technical guidance.
    • Proven ability to positively influence safety and maintenance outcomes without formal authority.
    • Strong interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, make sound decisions and adapt to changing operational priorities.
    • Experience participating in continuous improvement or reliability initiatives.
    • Ability to build collaborative relationships across Operations, Maintenance, Planning, Reliability and Engineering.
    • Previous acting supervisor, lead hand, crew lead, project lead or maintenance coordination experience is considered an asset.
  • Preferred Assets:
    • Previous experience working at Kearl or similar oilsands operations
    • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems
    • Additional qualifications (e.g. CSTS, OSSA and First Aid)
       

Job Location: Kearl Oilsands Site, Tailings Operations, Alberta

 

Shift Schedule: 14 days on/14 days off
