What You Will Do


You'll work within one of our organizations for the duration of your internship working alongside experienced professionals, receive coaching and mentorship, and contributing to projects that drive real results and add value to the business. Through hands-on experiences, you'll strengthen your professional capabilities while gaining a deeper understanding of industry operations. You'll also gain exposure to the day-to-day work of full-time engineers, scientists, and experienced professionals giving you a sense of what a career at Imperial looks like.

 

For Water Resources Engineering Student

As a Water Resources Engineering Student, you will combine engineering analysis, planning and design to support the development of surface water infrastructure and management systems across the Kearl site.
Responsibilities may include:

  • Defining drainage catchments using engineering and mine planning software (Deswik)
  • Developing hydrologic models for watershed analysis using HEC-HMS
  • Evaluating water routing alternatives while considering operational requirements and regulatory obligations
  • Design of water management infrastructure, including sumps, ditches, culverts, and discharge systems
  • Supporting troubleshooting of short-range challenges and definition of sustainable, long-term solutions
  • Supporting water-related studies and reviewing recommendations to help determine future requirements


For Geotechnical Engineering Student

As a Geotechnical Engineering Student, you will support the design, monitoring, and performance assessment of earth structures across the Kearl site. You will work closely with geotechnical engineers and field teams while gaining exposure to mine planning, tailings management, and large-scale earthworks.
Responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting design and surveillance activities for tailings dykes, overburden disposal areas, roads, and pit walls
  • Completing slope stability assessments using geotechnical analysis software such as Slope/W
  • Reviewing geotechnical instrumentation data to evaluate earth structure performance
  • Assisting with geotechnical investigations and technical reporting
  • Collaborating with construction and operations teams to evaluate field observations and construction deviations

 

This role offers valuable exposure to both office-based engineering work and field-based observations, helping students develop a practical understanding of geotechnical engineering in a mining environment.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Studying to achieve a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, or a related discipline
  • University student available for a work term beginning in January or May 2027
  • Currently enrolled in a university program and returning to full-time studies after the work term
  • Demonstrated leadership and strong academic skills
  • Highly motivated, enthusiastic, results-oriented individuals who are energized by working with people and by achieving superior results
  • Demonstrated initiative, curiosity, and commitment to continuous learning
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required for the role
  • Commitment to safety on and off the job

Preferred Qualifications/Experience 

  • Experience with AutoCAD, Deswik, or similar engineering software
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel and data analysis tools
  • Interest in mining, water resources, geotechnical engineering, or earth sciences
  • Previous work experience is considered an asset

For Water Resources Engineering Student

  • Experience or coursework related to hydrology, hydrogeology, watershed modelling, or water management
  • Experience with HEC-HMS is considered an asset

For Geotechnical Engineering Student

  • Experience or coursework related to soil mechanics, rock mechanics, slope stability, or earth structures
  • Experience with Slope/W is considered an asset

 

Work Locations: Calgary, AB or Kearl Site, AB (rotation)
 

Work Term: 12, or 16 months
 

Start Date: January or May 2027
