Function information
Come be part of the Kearl Technical Department at Imperial. Imperial has more than 140 years of history in Canada and a workforce of 5,000+ total employees. Our offices are located in Calgary, Alberta.
The technical team supports the Kearl mine site which has been in operation since 2012, and is located roughly 70 km north of Fort McMurray, Alberta. Oil sand ore is mined using electric and hydraulic shovels, hauled, crushed and mixed with water prior to sending the slurry through hydrotransport lines for processing to our plants. Kearl is a fly in fly out operation with transportation hubs located in Edmonton and Calgary.
Kearl is one of Canada’s highest quality oil sands deposits and represents the next generation of oil sands mining. Innovative technology is at the heart of Kearl. We’ve developed innovative approaches that enhance performance and reduce cost. The site is currently operating fully autonomous 797 haul trucks using Caterpillar’s MineStar system, making it one of the largest autonomous fleets in the world.
What role you will play in our team
Join our team as a Production Engineer and shape the future of production optimization at the Kearl mine.
The role primarily focuses on the coordination, optimization, and surveillance of production activities across all areas of the Kearl operation. Coordination spans both plant and mine areas of the operation, and is focused on short-range production plans including daily ore feed management and optimization.
The position will be based in Calgary or at the Kearl Oil Sands Operation with fly-in/fly-out arrangements, air travel provided from Calgary or Edmonton or bus transportation from Fort McMurray. Shifts are 14 days on and 14 days off consisting of 12 hour workdays and a rotation between day and night shifts.
What you will do
- Be a safety leader – support and adhere by all standards and procedures and operate with safety as a value
- Facilitate daily Kearl Asset production planning and alignment meetings
- Communicate production plan and throughput commitments across asset teams daily
- Ensure alignment between business teams and shifts on production goals
- Communicate updates that impact the production plan and evaluate options in real time that best manage changes in the operation
- Coordinate responses to unplanned production events
- Responsible for completing daily production surveillance reports
- Responsible for continuous monitoring of the mine and plant to identify and coordinate production related issues and opportunities
- Drive optimizations in the plant and mine that improve production
- Develop visualization dashboards, models, or programs to support planning, coordination and optimization
About you
Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining, Mineral Processing, Geoscience, or related Engineering fields
- 3+ years of oil sands mining or facilities experience
- Proficient with use of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication and coordination skills
- Highly motivated individual with ability to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer or Geologist (P.Eng. or P.Geo) designation or eligibility with APEGA
- Experience with production constraint modeling would be an asset
- Experience with visualization tools such as Power BI would be an asset
- Knowledge of oil sands geology (McMurray formation) would be an asset
- Experience with mine planning and mine management systems applications would be an asset (Deswik, Minestar)
