About Beaumont

With a population of more than 118,000, Beaumont ,Texas, is located in the Gulf Coast region of the United States, on the Neches River, about 85 miles east of Houston, the nation's fourth largest city. Beaumont has been a home to the oil industry from the days of the Spindletop oil boom until today, and along with nearby Port Arthur and Orange, is part of the Golden Triangle industrial area on the Texas Gulf Coast. What role you will play in our team

A Plant Operator Intern/Co-op is responsible for the safe, efficient performance of work required to operate the processing units and related facilities and to maintain these areas.  Interns/Co-ops will be involved in monitoring starting up and shutting down units and / or portions of units, such as pumps, furnaces, compressors, and processing systems; continuously monitoring and controlling the operating variables through local controllers such as temperature, pressure, and flow rate; and maintaining the equipment. They are required to work a 12-Hour Rotating Shifts and may work Overtime.

What you will do

• Reviews logs or computer data and computer generated schematics to ensure current process flow is running correctly.

• Physically inspects and monitors equipment and/or the work area using vision, hearing, smell, and touch, as appropriate, to ensure correct operation.

• Reviews unit logs to determine what occurred on previous shift.

• Reads schedule or daily orders to determine activities to be performed.

• Checks for leaks, freezing, overheating, and/or excessive vibration in equipment.

• Checks dials and gauges to collect temperature, pressure, level, and/or flow data and records readings as required on unit logs.

• Checks control valve positions to ensure valves are correctly positioned.

• Visually inspects flame pattern, header pressure, and fuel gas consumption in furnaces, identify hot spots and other problems in furnace.

• Performs basic equipment maintenance (adding lube oil, water, tightening valve packing, changing filters and steam traps, clearing equipment, etc.) under guidance of a qualified operator

• Communicates with console supervisor to remain informed of existing process conditions and relate any changes made or needed.

• Adjusts local process parameters (temperature, pressure, etc.) to maintain product specifications and equipment within its proper operating envelope under guidance of a qualified operator

• Operates and/or rotates pumps and compressors under guidance of a qualified operator

• Monitors equipment to ensure that it is operating correctly

• Checks gauges to ensure proper furnace operating conditions.

• Monitors field equipment using electronic test equipment including hand held monitors and computer monitoring equipment.

• Adjusts equipment to meet operating specifications under guidance of a qualified operator

• Monitors process control console and responds to alarms under guidance of a qualified operator

• Inspects cooling towers for structural damage.

• Inspects safety valves, fire extinguishers, fire hoses, breathing apparatus, and other safety equipment.

• Performs winterization and summarization of equipment for maximum equipment efficiencies under guidance of a qualified operator

• Inspects, flushes, paints, and greases fire monitors under guidance of a qualified operator

• Drains water from vessels and tanks under guidance of a qualified operator

About you

Skills and Qualifications

  • 2 year Process Operator degree or equivalent experience.
  • Must be a current student at Lamar Institute of Technology, Lamar State College – Orange or Lamar State College – Port Arthur.

Preferred Qualifications/ Experience

  • Have a basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite tools.

This Operations and Mechanical (O&M) position requires pre-employment testing. After applying you will receive a pop up giving you access to the assessment. You may take the assessment at that time or utilize the instructions below to access the assessment at a time convenient for you.  Note that the assessment must be completed by the deadline in order for you to be considered for the O&M position for which you have applied.

The O&M test has been revised.  Effective December 1, 2021 ALL candidates must complete the revised assessment.  Even if you have tested within the last 365 days (passed or failed), if you tested before December 1, 2021, you must complete the revised assessment to be considered for this O&M opportunity.  Failure to complete the assessment by the deadline will result in your disqualification from consideration for this position.  The assessment is the same for all O&M requisitions.  If you have completed the assessment after December 1, 2021, your assessment results will be mapped to this requisition when you try to access the test. Test passed candidates will be screened by the hiring team and a subset invited for interview.  Note that a satisfactory result on the assessment does not guarantee an interview.
