With a population of more than 77,000, Baytown, Texas, is located in the Gulf Coast region of the United States, just east of Houston, the nation's fourth largest city. Those who live and work in Baytown will find an area rich in history, as well as opportunities for outdoor activities due to its proximity to scenic waterways, namely Galveston Bay, the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou.
Founded in 1919, ExxonMobil's Baytown Complex is located on approximately 3,400 acres along the Houston Ship Channel, about 25 miles east of Houston. Employing a workforce of more than 8,500, it is comprised of four manufacturing sites, including one in nearby Mont Belvieu, and a global technology center. These include the Baytown Refinery, one of the largest refineries in the United States, and the Baytown Olefins Plant, one of the largest ethylene plants in the world.
Its scope of products includes fuels, lube oils, and chemical compounds used in a diverse range of products, from auto battery cases, diapers and tire inner tubes to pharmaceutical uses, food packaging, trash bags and more.

What role you will play in our team
Join us in helping grow our ProxximaTM polyolefin thermoset system business. These resin formulations are based on cyclic C5 monomers and other proprietary monomers and additives. Our catalyst formulations have strong foundations in Nobel Prize-winning technology developed by Professor Robert Grubbs and his research team. This powerful combination produces polymers that have the capability to outperform today’s thermoset composite solutions across a broad set of everyday applications such as wind turbine blades, electric vehicle parts, building construction, and anticorrosion coatings.
Develop and commercialize innovative Proxxima™ polyolefin thermoset products for Oil & Gas applications, with a primary focus on subsea thermal insulation systems. This includes solutions for flowlines, field joints, and subsea equipment, delivering differentiated performance while replacing conventional technologies such as Multi-Layer Polypropylene (MLPP) and silicone-based insulation systems.
Drive the development of next-generation materials with enhanced thermal insulation properties, lower thermal conductivity, and improved application efficiency to meet evolving industry needs. Leverage knowledge of offshore pipeline installation methods, including J-Lay, Reel-Lay, and S-Lay, to define critical material requirements, evaluate performance, and support the validation, optimization, and development of Proxxima resin technologies.
Apply a strong understanding of flow assurance and subsea operating conditions to identify customer needs, develop fit-for-purpose solutions, and expand Proxxima applications across the Oil & Gas sector. Explore and develop new application opportunities, including re-fracturing (Refrac), Plug and Abandonment (P&A), and other emerging energy infrastructure technologies, while collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive product qualification, commercialization, and business growth.
Develop customer-focused solutions and provide on-site technical support during installation. Assist customers with process optimization, troubleshooting, and implementation, while recommending equipment upgrades and improvements to enhance performance and reliability. Core to this role is the ability to develop structure-property relationships between additives (monomer, rubber, plasticizers, diluents, catalyst, formulations, processing, cure state etc.) and ultimate performance
Your office is at the Baytown Technology and Engineering Complex located in Baytown, TX. However, part of your time will be spent collaborating with commercial colleagues located at the ExxonMobil Campus in Spring, TX, as well as traveling throughout North America and internationally to support customer trials.
What you will do
- Develop new thermoset resin systems based on cyclic C5, other co-monomers, rubbers, diluents, and other additives and components.
- Optimize existing thermoset catalyst systems utilizing novel additives to improve quality or modulate network formation.
- Develop fundamental understanding of structure / performance relationships and utilize DoEs and statistics to do so efficiently.
- Develop raw material and finished product specifications.
- Develop new test methods suitable for such specifications.
- Provide technical insights gleaned from the market to help guide new product and application developments.
- Collaborate with technical, commercial, and manufacturing colleagues to ensure rapid development & commercialization of new products & solutions. Lead these programs, when appropriate.
- Provide market insights to inform and update business strategy.
- Develop robust solutions for fabricating articles made from ProxximaTM systems.
- Provide on-site technical support for customers producing non-reinforced molded goods through open mold processes.
- Assist customers in processing optimization and, where needed, provide guidance on equipment upgrades.
- Develop novel technology to strengthen the portfolio of intellectual property.
- Author technical reports and technical publications to share learnings internally.
- Author promotional brochures, presentations, and technical data sheets highlighting performance benefits.
- Train and mentor less experienced colleagues
About you
Skills & Qualifications:
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science, Petroleum Engineering or related degree
- Strong understanding of flow assurance, thermal management, and insulation material requirements in the Oil & Gas industry
- Experienced in assessing insulation needs for pipelines and process equipment to mitigate flow-related risks, optimize operational performance, and maintain asset integrity
- Demonstrated expertise in statistics, analytical techniques and problem solving.
- Proficient in use of computers and possess excellent administrative and organizational skills
- Strong interpersonal, analytical and communication skills.
- Must be hands on with inclination to be lab based.
- Good team player and self-motivated
Preferred Qualifications & Experience:
- Fundamental understanding of polymer product-structure property relationship, particularly as they related to thermoset systems
- Fundamental understanding of different key additives such as rubber, plasticizers etc. on properties of thermoset systems.
- Fundamental understanding in polymerization reaction kinetics, particularly those related to ring opening metathesis polymerization or general chain growth polymerization.
- Knowledge of major thermoset markets, applications, and common thermoset processing and conversion technologies such as injection molding, VARTM, hand lay-up, filament winding, pultrusion, and spray coatings
- Knowledge of Intellectual property assessment/procurement
