Position Summary

The Australian Direct Tax Manager is one of four tax specialists within the Australian Finance team. The team supports operations across Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands and works closely with members of the tax team across the Asia-Pacific region and the United States. The role provides strategic tax advice to the Australian business, manages significant tax controversy matters, and supports major business decisions. Areas of focus include Australian corporate income tax, international tax, tax governance, tax disputes, Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (PRRT), and other direct taxes relevant to the oil and gas industry. The role is primarily advisory and controversy-focused, with technical support provided to tax compliance teams as required.

 

Key Responsibilities

Tax Advisory

  • Provide practical, commercially focused tax advice to the business.
  • Advise on Australian corporate income tax, international tax, restructures, acquisitions, divestments and financing arrangements.
  • Provide advice on tax consolidation, tax losses and cross-border transactions.
  • Advise on PRRT and other direct taxes relevant to the oil and gas industry.
  • Support major projects, investments and business initiatives.
  • Develop practical options and solutions to complex commercial and tax issues.
  • Identify opportunities to protect and enhance enterprise value.
  • Proactively bring forward insights that support business decision-making and strategic outcomes.

 

Tax Controversy

  • Assist in the management of Australian tax audits, reviews and information requests.
  • Support engagement with taxation authorities and external advisers throughout audit and review processes.
  • Lead the management of Australian tax disputes and litigation matters.
  • Coordinate technical submissions and engagement with external advisers and legal counsel.
  • Anticipate and proactively manage emerging controversy risks.
  • Represent the tax function in interactions with revenue authorities and external stakeholders as required.

 

Strategy and Business Partnership

  • Influence commercial outcomes through sound technical and commercial advice.
  • Support stakeholders in evaluating opportunities, alternatives and risks.
  • Challenge conventional thinking and help drive better business outcomes.
  • Contribute to transformational initiatives and process improvements.
  • Leverage technology, automation and data-driven insights where appropriate.
  • Act with urgency and accountability in delivering outcomes.
  • Support the business in taking well-considered and appropriately governed positions.

 

Experience and Qualifications

  • Degree in Accounting, Commerce, Finance, Law or a related discipline.
  • 7+ years tax advisory experience.
  • Strong Australian corporate tax expertise.
  • Experience in international tax and tax controversy.
  • Experience gained in a Big Four firm, leading law firm and/or multinational corporation.
  • Masters of Taxation, CTA, CA, CPA or similar qualification advantageous.
  • Exposure to PRRT advantageous but not essential.

 

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will be a technically strong and commercially minded tax advisor with significant corporate and international tax experience. They will be a self-starter who takes ownership of outcomes, influences decisions, develops practical solutions, brings forward external insights and supports the business in taking well-considered risks.
