Inspection Student (Mechanical Technologist/Welding)

Job description

As an inspection student at Sarnia refinery, you will be working under the supervision of an engineer and/or an inspector while supporting inspection activities relating to fixed equipment (vessel, tower, heat exchanger etc.) and piping in a petroleum refinery environment. Inspection activities involves development, planning, testing, record keeping, etc. of inspection tasks to ensure mechanical integrity of fixed equipment and piping is maintained at the highest level of standards.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Inspecting piping and equipment within the scheduled interval. Coordinating with any external resources as and when required to complete inspections
  • Updating inspection database, writing and entering history and thickness reports into the database for record keeping and generating next inspection tasks
  • Updating and creating piping line list, isometric drawings, reading flow diagrams/P&IDs, in preparation for developing equipment strategies
  • Studying degradation mechanisms and developing inspection programs.
  • Carrying out failure analysis and performing some hands on testing using inspection instruments e.g. Ultrasonic, Boroscope, Thermography Camera, Positive Material Identification (PMI) on new or existing piping or equipment.

 

Qualifications

Academic:

  • Must be a 2nd or 3rd year student enrolled in a mechanical, manufacturing or welding engineering technologist diploma
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Other:

  • Must have a valid driver's license and safe driving record.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment
  • Sound reasoning ability with a high level of self-initiative and a strong desire to learn
  • Knowledge and skills with computer applications such as Microsoft, excel, word, access, etc.
