Process Safety Engineer - Nanticoke Refinery

Job description

The Process Safety Engineer is responsible for supporting refinery and chemical plant personnel in process safety risk management.
Examples of specific responsibilities:

  • Provide process safety and risk related technical support to Nanticoke Refinery
  • Assist process, design, and process technical personnel in developing risk based solutions
  • Manage risk assessment recommendation tracking database and associated stewardship
  • Provide process safety and risk management stewardship for site management
  • Manage and participate in risk assessments such as HAZOPs and Comprehensive Risk Assessments, and associated follow-up in compliance with corporate, site and regulatory requirements
  • Actively participate in safety engineers networks
  • Assist in evaluation of critical equipment
  • Develop and Manage programs to meet regulatory process safety requirements                
  • Assist and Support incident investigations associated with significant events in refinery and/or chemical plant operations
  • Maintain a system to steward process safety key performance indicators (KPIs) for each business team
  • Participate and perform process safety audits


  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering



  • At least 10 years of petrochemical engineering work experience
  • Basic knowledge of process design with emphasis on:
    • Pressure Relief
    • Equipment Layout and Spacing
    • Emergency Isolation, Depressurization, S/D systems
    • Atmospheric, Pressure and Refrigeration Storage
    • Rail, & Truck Loading Facilities
    • LPG / LNG
  • Basic knowledge of process safety technology and methodologies such as:
    • HAZOP training
    • Emergency response
    • Human factors
    • Fire protection technology
    • Control of ignition sources
    • Incident investigation
  • Basic knowledge of Refining/Petrochemical Processes
    • Knowledge of Chemical / Refining industries, and associated process and maintenance practices.
  • Basic knowledge of federal & provincial safety regulations applicable in the province of Ontario
    •  Knowledge and experience in the application of OSHA & TSSA regulations, industry standards and corporate guidance on a variety of safety topics
  • Basic understanding of safe operating procedures
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to communicate succinctly both orally and in written form
    • Ability to communicate and interact with senior management and hourly workforce
    • Ability to teach and lead training sessions and meetings
  • Capable of creating and working on teams
    • Effective at achieving consensus
  • Ability to critically evaluate situations and develop recommendations

Eligibility to work in Canada
