What role you will play in our team
The Kearl Oilsands Facility is looking for power engineering technician students to work in our Utilities Business Team Operations department. The operations department ensures the safe and reliable operation of the Utility Plant equipment and processes. This assignment will involve being mentored by existing Utility Plant technicians.
As the successful candidate, you will:
- Gain exposure to the design, operation and maintenance of large-scale power plant equipment including high pressure steam boilers, water treatment package, compressed air, and fuel gas systems
- Experience a processing facility working with power engineers, technical engineers, reliability engineers, and facility management personnel
- Participate in discussions and daily tasks including operator rounds, sampling, equipment preparation and site emergency simulations
- Be provided with on-the-job training by experienced employees
- Qualify for ABSA steam time in a 1st Class Power Plant
What you will do
Your responsibilities will include:
- Understanding and abiding by all safety rules and standards, reporting hazards and assuming responsibility for the safe operation of your assigned unit, company vehicle and tools assigned to you.
- Understanding and abiding by applicable government regulations, e.g. Transportation of Dangerous Goods and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.
- Participating in safety programs, safety meetings and attending training sessions; completing self-development courses.
- Assisting unit technicians in day-today operations activities in operating units including large scale power plant equipment including high pressure steam boilers and a cogeneration unit, water treatment package, compressed air and fuel gas systems, exchangers, compressors, and pumps.
- Monitoring equipment operation and process variables to identify and correct sub-optimal performance
- Assisting in the preparation of equipment for maintenance work
- Assisting with regularly scheduled process tasks
- Collecting samples, assessing lab data and performing follow up activities relating to product quality
- Participating in team meetings and activities
- Identifying improvements to streamline unit monitoring processes
- Assuring established loss control and environmental standards are followed while demonstrating responsibility for personal safety and the safety of others
About you
Skills and Qualifications
- 1st year power engineering technology diploma students
- Important: If available, submit your most recent unofficial transcripts with your application. Unofficial transcripts will be required if selected for an interview
Preferred Qualifications / Experience
- Sound reasoning ability, good communication and interpersonal skills, high level of self-initiative, comfortable working within a team environment
- Assignment will involve working 14 on / 14 off rotation with alternating Day and Night twelve-hour shifts involving inside and outside work and may occasionally require working at heights. While at site students will be lodged in one of our camps. Currently Kearl supplies flights to and from site through Canadian North through one of our two hubs in Calgary or Edmonton.
- Basic computer literacy
- Valid Alberta graduated Class 5 driver’s license, and a safe driving record are required.
- Preference will be given to Indigenous candidates, particularly those from the Wood Buffalo Region.

Eligibility to work in Canada
