Job description


  • Core team member of the mine automation team that supports systems, networks, data, applications, with a key presence in the control room 
  • Provides mine control system applications support for Kearl Mine, including: Minestar, Command for Hauling, Minestar Fleet, Minestar Terrain, Minestar Health
  • Collaborates with key business Team stakeholders (Operations, Maintenance, Reliability, Mine Planners and other Technical staff) as part of a team  to enable safe, reliable, profitable and sustainable mine production and operations for the Kearl Asset 
  • Acts as first point interface contact on mine control system/application issues, and reports out to other functions
  • Initiates and drives control system change requests and other management of change processes 
  • Supports Mine Operations in translating mine plans into the mine control system software to help execute the plans (i.e. dispatch, material selection by grade, blending, monthly tonnage reconciliations)
  • Interfaces with vendors/OEMs onsite and remote support staff to successfully deploy ongoing upgrades to the mine control system
  • Supports troubleshooting of the Autonomous Haul System i.e., Truck stoppages, slowdowns, other inefficiencies) and drives to completion the improvement opportunities 
  • Supports the data integrity and maintenance of key operations reports (i.e. reliability/production/safety KPIs) as it relates to the mine operation
  • Collaborate with other key functions to prioritize and bring forward customer enhancement requests to the vendor/OEM of the autonomous haulage system
  • Ensures we have a working configuration of the background files, settings and model elements in our application and database




  • Degree or Diploma in Mining Engineering from an accredited University or College 




  • 5+ years of experience in mine operations (roles may vary but ideally linked to production operations/mine planning)
  • A valid class 5 driver’s license required
  • Experience in following areas is considered an asset
    • Mine planning experience 
    • Troubleshooting and optimization of truck fleet production and reliability 
    • Familiarity with autonomous haulage systems - including the hardware and applications 
    • Experience with a vendor/OEM mine application/dispatch/control system 
    • Experience with databases and/or managing large sets of data 
    • Exposure and/or awareness of network/telecom technologies 
  • Registration through APEGA as a P.ENG/P.L. (ENG) is required for this position
  • Position is a 14 days on / 14 days off, with alternating day and night shifts at Kearl site (fly-in / fly-out provided at Calgary or Edmonton hubs and camp on site)

  • This position will be a full-time fly-in, fly-out camp-based role to the Kearl site with a 14 days on/14 days off work schedule. Bussing is available from Fort McMurray, and flights are available from either Calgary or Edmonton. Relocation assistance to Fort McMurray, Calgary or Edmonton is available if required. Bus transportation is also available to Kearl site from Fort McMurray at the beginning and end of each shift rotation for Fort McMurray residents
  • Kearl operations will provide safe, secure and quiet accommodation near to the worksite for employees working on rotating work schedules. Facilities include a private room/washroom for each employee.
