Job description

Reporting to Plant Shift Foremen, the Plant Operator is expected to safety & efficiently operate the unit/s within the plant environment which could include but is not limited to the Ore Preparation/Hydro Transport, Extraction, Froth Treatment, Fine Tailings Treatment & Utilities areas. Provide vacation coverage for experienced operating staff



  • Ensures plant equipment is operated safely/efficiently and maintained through structured surveillance rounds
  • Consistently working in a safe manner and manage the safety of the unit and those working in it on a daily basis
  • Utilizing a proactive approach for troubleshooting and identifying maintenance issues of the operating unit
  • Complete minor maintenance as required
  • Ensure equipment is locked-out/tagged-out and safe for maintenance activities as required (LOTO)
  • Monitor DCS control systems for assigned unit/s
  • Maximizing production in a safe manner while protecting the environment





  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is a minimum requirement
  • Minimum 3rd class steam ticket required




  • Able and willing to work a 14 on/14 off rotation at a remote production facility
  • Related experience within the oil sands, oil & gas processing, or Utility sector would be an asset
  • Various levels of plant operator experience required
  • Engineering Technology diploma would be an asset
  • Valid class 5 driver's license and safe driving record are required
  • Basic computer skills
  • Adhere to all safety, health and environment policies and procedures
  • Work as a supportive team member
  • Take part in all required training
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Able to work independently
  • Ability to build good, respectful working relationships
  • Emergency Response training preferred

  • This position will be a full time fly-in, fly-out camp based role to the Kearl site with a 14 days on/14 days off work schedule. Bussing is available from Fort McMurray, and flights are available from either Calgary or Edmonton. Relocation assistance to Fort McMurray, Calgary or Edmonton is available if required. Bus transportation is also available to Kearl site from Fort McMurray at the beginning and end of each shift rotation for Fort McMurray residents
  • Kearl operations will provide safe, secure and quiet accommodation near to the worksite for employees working on rotating work schedules. Facilities include a private room/washroom for each employee.
