Imperial is recruiting for Mechanical Engineering students at Strathcona Refinery located in Edmonton. Working under the guidance and mentorship of staff Mechanical Engineers and Equipment Inspectors, you will gain an understanding of materials, corrosion and inspection technology used to manage current equipment integrity of fixed equipment in petrochemical plants.  The role will be to support the maintenance and integrity of fixed equipment to ensure safety and reliability, while maximizing operating cost effectiveness. Examples of specific job responsibilities:

  • Develop and provide engineering analysis to extend the remaining life of equipment – eg. Minimum Thickness Calculations, Fitness-For-Service Assessments
  • Preparation of mechanical specifications to replace or upgrade pressure equipment for maintenance projects
  • Analyze and recommend equipment run length, maintenance requirements, materials selection, inspection intervals, repair/replacement timing
  • Understand what we do, how we do it, then find creative ways to make us more efficient!

 

This is a very unique opportunity as it will give you real-time exposure to design, fabricate, and see your engineering solutions get executed in the field.

 

You may be required to give a presentation on the assigned project(s) at the end of your work term depending on the department you are working for.

Qualifications

Academic:

  • Studying to achieve a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline)
  • University Engineering student available for a work term beginning in January 2022
  • Currently enrolled in a University Engineering program and returning to full-time studies after the work term
  • Your most recent unofficial transcript(s) must be submitted with your application
  • Demonstrated leadership and strong academic skills

Other: 

  • Previous industry experience is considered beneficial, but not essential
  • Commitment to safety on and off the job
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required for all roles
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and in a team-based environment
  • A valid driver’s license is required for certain positions
  • Work schedule: Full time position

 

Start date: January, 2022

 

Work term: 12 months (Please indicate in your cover letter the work term / duration that you are interested in working based on your availability and school program).
