Environmental Advisor

Job description

The Environmental Advisor is a primary point of contact for environmental and regulatory matters at the Strathcona Refinery.  This role is responsible for coordination and oversight of environmental activities and regulatory compliance programs for the site.

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Day-to-day environmental & regulatory guidance for operational, technical, maintenance, project and other departments on site
  • Regulatory compliance activities: review of applicable / updated regulations, developing compliance plans in consultation with affected refinery departments, implementing compliance plans according to established best practices and completing field verifications & validations
  • Coordination and participation in various assessments as required
  • Interaction with regulators and completion of any regulatory reporting as needed
  • Assist refinery with wildlife monitoring, advice, and interaction with wildlife contractors and regulators
  • Coordinating environmental and regulatory sampling, analyses and associated reporting as required
  • Coordinating 3rd party environmental consulting work on site as required
  • Environmental permit development and support as required
  • Development and delivery of environmental & regulatory training content as required
  • Completion of environmental & regulatory projects as assigned
  • Identifying, progressing and stewarding initiatives to improve the site’s environmental performance

Qualifications

  • Applicants must possess a University degree in Engineering, Natural or Environmental Sciences or another technical field related to Environmental & Regulatory management
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication required
  • 8-10 years relevant environmental & regulatory experience, with knowledge of refinery or petrochemical operations
  • Excellent analytical, communication, interpersonal, decision-making and issue resolution skills
  • Well-developed planning, organizational and project management skills
  • Proficient computer skills, especially in MS Word, Excel and SharePoint
  • Ability to work in both office settings and onsite operational units
  • Driver’s license and safe driving record are required
  • Knowledge of applicable Canadian & Alberta regulations highly desirable
  • Strong process improvement mentality; Six-Sigma green belt and above an asset
  • Knowledge of a behavior-based loss prevention system an asset
  • Occasional travel associated with this role
