Job description

This is a 4-month student work term from May to the end of August 2021. As a student Plant Operator you will act as a relief person for operating staff in the process, water reuse or steam plant facilities. Under the supervision of senior operations staff, through on-the-job experience supplemented with additional related formal training, you will learn operating skills in the areas of safety procedures for work in hazardous locations and basic plant process and plant equipment operations and start-up. Driving is an occupational requirement. Occasional driving on gravel roads will be required for transportation between sites.
 

Your responsibilities will include

  • Abiding by all safety rules and standards, reporting hazards and holding responsibility for the safe operation of your assigned facilities, tools, and company vehicles
  • Participating in safety programs and attending training sessions; completing self-development courses
  • Understanding and abiding by applicable government regulations, e.g. Transportation of Dangerous Goods and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
  • Assisting in the operation of process, water reuse and steam plant units
  • Operating area process equipment, steam generators, water treatment facilities, compressors, pumps and treaters
  • Making process changes to ensure quality control of end products
  • Assisting lead operator in plant unit operations
  • Actively participating as a team member in the design/engineering of new ideas
  • Working together with trades and contract personnel as necessary
  • Safely performing physical tasks at times, e.g. moving drums of chemicals, lifting, climbing ladders
  • Performing minor maintenance and plant housekeeping in a safe manner while protecting the environment

Qualifications

Academic

  • Latest/highest education completed
  • First year student enrolled in Power Engineering Technology diploma
  • 4th class Power Engineering certificate may be required

 

Other

  • Valid class 5 driver's license and safe driving record are required for this position
