A Safety position is available at Imperial’s Cold Lake, Alberta location.  This is a term position providing up to one year paid internship with the possibility of a one year extension.  Upon successful completion of the 2 year program, possibility for offer of full-time employment.


Your primary responsibility will be to  contribute to effective safety performance by providing in field direction, coaching, mentorship, support, and consultation to workers and front line supervisors to aid in achieving best-ever safety performance.  

 

This is an excellent opportunity as an intern to gain valuable experience in the oil and gas industry.  We offer you challenging, discipline-related work experience in an operating environment.

 
Transportation to and from the work site is provided to those within 80 km from the Cold Lake operations.  If you reside further than 80 km away, you are required to make arrangements for a pick-up point within the 80 km.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Demonstrating safety leadership by providing on-going coaching/mentorship through hazard identification, behavior-based observations, etc.  Coach workers and supervisors on the use of safety tools that include but are not limited to:
    • Online Proactive reporting (IronSight)
    • Behavior Based Observations
    • Hazard IDs
    • JSA
    • Stop and Think
  • Minimum 60% on-site interfacing with the workforce 
    • Participating in on-site interfaces demonstrating safety leadership and providing the workforce with on-going safety coaching and attesting. For example, participating in toolbox talks, daily safety meetings, general safety meetings, site walkarounds, LPOs, etc.
  • Understanding online leading indicator data and developing insightful dashboards easily communicated by our front-line leadership.
  • Supporting the development of content for monthly safety meetings and provide the coaching and mentoring to front line supervisors for effective communication of the content
  • Supporting OI team in the development of specific safety initatives and projects
  • Participating in incident investigations (e.g. TapRooT/5 Why) investigations as required
  • Providing support for incident management, care management and classification
  • Monitoring and reporting on teams proactive reporting and safety performance (hurts, near misses etc.) 
  • Analyzing Leading Indicator data (using Tableau) and providing recommended focus areas for Front Line Supervisors

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Assisting front line supervisor with closure of actions from incidents, near misses, HIDs, observations and Loss Control Inspections
  • Attests, validates and verifies the application of safety tools from the Safety Management System, Work Management and OIMS standards (e.g. work permits, job safety analysis, stop & think, etc.)
  • Providing leadership, direction, mentorship and support to contractor Safety Advisors
  • Providing SSHE support to managers, superintendents and foremen in the strategic implementation of Cold Lake’s Safety Team key focus areas and tactics.
  • Providing problem solving and guidance on day to day field issues as requested by site
  • Managing numerous priorities simultaneously with tight and conflicting deadlines
  • Other tasks as required

Qualifications

 

Academic

  • Current enrollment in an OH&S related post-secondary program.

 

Other

  • The ability to influence without authority
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record
  • Working knowledge of the type of work they will be supporting preferred
  • Experience in the development, implementation and maintenance of health and safety management systems
  • Technical expertise in the area of personnel safety and safety management systems
  • High level of analytical ability and strategic thinking required to gather and evaluate complex information obtained from a variety of sources and to formulate recommendations
  • The ability to lead and conduct audits and investigations
  • Ability to interact at all levels of the organization and across the businesses
  • Effective communication, writing and public speaking skills are essential
  • The ability to develop and conduct presentations for a variety of audiences
  • Leadership skills to act as a role model, promoting a positive influence on the work of others through demonstration of technical expertise and effective interpersonal skills


 

Start date: Q2 ,2023

 

Work term: Up to a 1-year paid internship with possibility of a 1-year extension. Upon successful completion of the 2-year program, possibility for offer of full-time employment.

Eligibility to work in Canada
