The Indigenous Consultation Student is is available at Imperial’s Cold Lake, Alberta location.  This is a term position providing up to one year paid internship with the possibility of a one-year extension.  Upon successful completion of the Indigenous Internship program, possibility for offer of full-time employment.

Your primary responsibility will be supporting the Socioeconomic Team team at the Cold Lake Operations site in implementing the Company’s Indigenous Relations strategy. The Cold Lake Operations is located on Indigenous traditional land and we recognize that our company and our employees have an important role to play in progressing reconciliation. Our goal is to collaborate with Indigenous communities on a common vision for progress, environmental stewardship and sustainable development. Our four pillars of engagement include: Consultation, Workforce development, Business development & Community Relations. This position will be designed to primarily support the consultation and community relations pillars and may include opportunities to support workforce development and business development activities. 
This is an excellent opportunity for a student to gain valuable experience in the oil and gas industry.  We offer you challenging, discipline-related work experience in an operating environment. 


Transportation to and from the work site is provided to those within 80 km from the Cold Lake operations.  If you reside further than 80 km away, you are required to make arrangements for a pick-up point within the 80 km.

Key Responsibilities


  • Executing meaningful consultation and engagement grounded in a commitment to listen, understand, and collaborate with local Indigenous communities. 
  • Fulfilling regulatory requirements outlined by the Alberta Consultation Office. 
  • Supporting material preparation for meetings with the local Indigenous communities – ensuring project plans and technical details are presented in an accessible and relatable manner.
  • Preparing written responses to environmental, technical, and execution-based questions received from local Indigenous communities. 
  • Attending local Indigenous community events and career fairs as a representative of Imperial.  
  • Compiling historical resource data to support the creation of a digital database and visual interface.
  • Supporting business development and workforce development programs worked collaboratively between the Company and local Indigenous communities. 




  • Preference to currently enrolled in post-secondary degree or diploma program with a focus in the social sciences, environmental studies, anthropology or equivalent disciplines.
  • Most recent unofficial transcript(s) must be submitted with your application
  • Demonstrated leadership and strong academic skills



  • Previous industry or environmental experience is considered beneficial, but not essential
  • Ability to work in a high pace and often changing work environment  
  • Proficiency with computer programs including spreadsheets, presentation applications
  • Self-motivated with strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Critical thinking skills and ability to problem solve
  • A valid driver's license and a safe driving record are required for this position


Start date: Q2 ,2023


Work term: Up to a 1-year paid internship with possibility of a 1-year extension. Upon successful completion of the 2-year program, possibility for offer of full-time employment.

Eligibility to work in Canada
