Upstream Engineering Students - Calgary

Job Description

Imperial is recruiting for engineering students to assign to a variety of positions located at our head office in Calgary supporting our upstream operations in Alberta. You will be assigned to a specific position and department based on your interests, skills, knowledge, experience as well as Imperial’s business needs. Examples of assignments may include:

 

Kearl Mining Engineering Student
Under the guidance of engineering staff you will learn skills in the area of mine planning & design, mine dispatch, data analytics, and other mine performance improvement projects. You will become very familiar with equipment monitoring / tracking and optimization systems and the overall mining process in oil sands. 

 

Kearl Geotechnical Engineering Student
Support geotechnical design, surveillance, and reporting for Kearl’s earth structures, including tailings dykes, overburden disposal areas, roads, and pit walls.

 

Kearl Water Resources Engineering Student
Support design, modelling, and monitoring of Kearl’s water resources infrastructure (hydrology and hydrogeology), including pumping wells, monitoring wells, ponds, ditches, sumps.

 

Kearl Tailings Planning and Processing Engineering Student
You will support the engineering staff on both tailings planning and tailings processing engineering. Under the supervision of engineering staff you will learn skills in the area of tailings planning, tailings modeling/mass balance. You will become very familiar with the tailings processing side of the business - assisting in surveillance and stewardship reporting.

 

Kearl Reclamation/Construction Engineering Student
Support planning, coordination, execution, monitoring, and reporting for Kearl’s earth structures (including tailings dykes, overburden disposal areas, roads, pit walls, ditches, sumps) and progressive reclamation activities (including soil salvage/storage/placement, seed collection/germination/planting, environmental stewardship reporting).

 

Kearl Reliability Engineering Student
Support Ops Tech mine mobile heavy equipment reliability improvement projects. Specific projects will vary based on timing of term and could be related to mine haul trucks, shovels, dozers, excavators, or other heavy support equipment. Projects will likely involve working with multiple groups for site data collection, data analysis, and proposing improvements.

 

Kearl Plant Automation Engineering Student
Support Maintenance and Operations to resolve plant controls reliability issues for the Kearl Oil Sands Operation
Apply Engineering fundamentals in design, selection and application of process control solutions.
Analyze plant production data to identify process control issues and develop control strategies to mitigate them.
Analyze process alarm data, identify bad actors and develop alarm management solutions. 

 

Kearl Mine Automation Engineering Student
Support Maintenance and Operations to resolve mine system reliability issues for the Kearl Oil Sands Operation.
Support technical experts in identifying, and planning for network improvement (wired and wireless) initiatives for the mine .
Support resolution of data flow, quality and reporting issues.

 

Kearl Automation AHS Engineering Student
Support project management and engineering activities for the Autonomous Haulage System.

Joint Interest Engineering Student
Management of Change projects involving engineering design for facility modifications and enhancements (piping, pipelines, instrumentation, controls, rotating equipment, etc.).  
Work within a multidisciplinary group (reservoir, subsurface, materials, rotating equipment, etc.) to optimize plant production and resolve process issues. Direct support to Operations and Maintenance in reviewing technical requests for information including changes, repairs & alterations of equipment, assessment of pressure relief path analysis when removing relief devices from service, replacement in kind of equipment and troubleshooting equipment issues. 
Perform regular process surveillance of area driven KPI’s and troubleshooting, provide recommendations to Operations for optimization opportunities. 
Implement industry code and design practices (CSA Z662, ASME B31.3, ExxonMobil Global Practices) into engineered design/packages.

Facility Engineering Student
-Trouble shooting and consulting on facility design and operating problems, working directly with operations and maintenance personal
-Prepare engineering designs using industry code and company standards for facility upgrades and replacement in kinds of piping, pumps, and all other process equipment.
-Perform studies on enhancement opportunities, finalize studies with engineered design packages for execution
-Provide engineering guidance on execution of facility upgrades, work directly with maintenance group and contractors
-Direct mentorship under professional engineers

Kearl Materials Engineering Student
Role will support the Kearl Operations Technical Programmatics team in the Materials discipline. Under the supervision of engineering staff you will review/analysis of inspection data, upgrade piping inspection packages, and design upgraded piping components to increase erosion resistance.

Electrical & Instrumentation Engineering Student

  • Will be responsible to support instrument & electrical activities across Imperial’s upstream assets. This job will consist of an even mix of instrumentation and electrical based work. Responsibilities below:
  • Provide engineering expertise and support for safe and reliable operations, maintenance work and projects for Kearl, Cold Lake, and conventional assets
  • Prepare engineering assessments and engineering designs, conduct trouble-shooting and root cause failure analyses
  • Develop engineering solutions to address and rectify issues
  • Manage long term equipment improvement initiatives

Qualifications

Academic:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s  Degree in Engineering
  • Demonstrated leadership and strong academic skills
  • Previous industry experience is considered beneficial, but not essential

Other:

  • Commitment to safety on and off the job
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required for the role
  • Highly motivated, enthusiastic, results-oriented individuals who are energized by working with people and by achieving superior results
