Senior Issues Advisor (director-level)

The senior issues advisor will be responsible for identifying government and non-government organized issues and initiatives that may impact the business interests of Imperial Oil. The position will lead the development of strategies that leverage internal and cross-functional business expertise with Imperial’s upstream, downstream and chemical’s businesses. The position will also be responsible for engaging with ExxonMobil’s issues management team to coordinate responses to cross border issues as needed.


The successful candidate will be expected to engage with a range of external individuals and organizations, including trade associations, governments and their agencies, business groups, political and civic leaders. Experience in building consensus and influencing outcomes with disparate groups will be an asset.


This position is a senior individual contributor who will work directly with members of Imperial’s executive management committee and the chief executive officer of the company. The position plays a key role in an innovative team operating in a fast-moving, issues-rich environment. A national perspective would be an asset, as would the confidence and ability to work with minimal problem definition.


Integrated influencing skills is a critical area for the company given the high level of interest in energy issues among government officials, opinion leaders, and the public at large.



Job requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree minimum; advanced degree in a policy-related discipline advantageous
  • A demonstrated track record of achievement with senior business leaders
  • Strong campaign skills and strategy development and execution 
  • Strong understanding of economics and the operations of global markets
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in public policy, campaign management or related activities
  • Knowledge or experience in the Canadian energy or resource sector would be desirable


Preferred Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Ability to influence without authority
  • Ability to quickly understand, assimilate, and communicate complex issues
  • Familiarity and interest in issues related to energy, economics, the environment, and government relations
  • Strong project-management skills with an ability to multi-task and remain flexible when priorities change; public policy experience is advantageous
  • A positive, proactive team-oriented attitude, culturally sensitive and ideally familiar with the working environment of a large, national organization
