Graduate Student Intern-Heavy Oil Laboratory Experimentalist

Job description

The successful candidate will join Imperial Oil's Heavy Oil In-situ Upstream Research Team. Our team researches new, and improves existing, in-situ recovery processes to economically extract bitumen while reducing GHG's and water use intensity. These exciting recovery technologies can be applied across Imperial's existing and undeveloped assets. The research team helps to drive the development of these exciting technologies from concept, through early modelling, lab scale experimentation, full field simulation and field scale pilot with a strong focus on delivering quality results to drive business decisions.

Job summary:

  • Join a team of dedicated, highly-skilled and industry-wide recognized researchers
  • Design laboratory experimental set-up
  • Conduct laboratory experiments for non-condensable gas diffusion/dissolution and ex-solution measurement in heavy oil
  • Interpret the laboratory data
  • Perform mathematical/numerical modeling of dissolution and ex-solution mechanisms
  • Support the technology development team to progress an exciting new technology towards commercialization and realization of economic and environmental benefits

Academic: Master or PhD student in chemical or petroleum engineering 


Other: Hands-on experience in laboratory design and testing of heavy oil diffusion/PVT experiments required


Start date: January 2020


Work term: 8 months


Location: Calgary, AB
