What role you will play in our team

 

ExxonMobil is seeking a highly capable Mid-Level PLC Programmer to support and enhance automation systems across upstream oil and gas operations. This role focuses on developing, optimizing, and sustaining Allen Bradley and DS800 PLC systems that support critical field production, artificial lift, facilities, and safety-related controls. Candidates must bring strong technical experience in upstream environments where reliability, safety, and real-time control are essential. This position collaborates closely with engineering, operations, and instrumentation teams to ensure automation systems operate reliably under field conditions and meet industry and company standards.

What you will do

 

  • Design, develop, and maintain PLC programs for Allen Bradley and DS800 systems in upstream oil and gas applications.
  • Analyze automation needs and implement solutions that improve safety, operational efficiency, and reliability.
  • Update and optimize existing PLC logic to support system changes, expansions, and performance improvements.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation including program descriptions, logic diagrams, and revision logs.
  • Perform troubleshooting, diagnostics, and preventative maintenance on PLC and automation equipment.
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, IT and OT teams, and field technicians to ensure system reliability.
  • Provide technical support and training to technicians and team members.
  • Participate in project planning, development, testing, and commissioning for automation projects.
  • Stay current on automation technologies, cybersecurity requirements, and industry standards.

About You

 

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Equivalent experience may be considered. Three to five years of PLC programming experience with Allen Bradley ControlLogix or CompactLogix and DS800 systems.
  • Hands-on experience in upstream oil and gas operations including well sites, production facilities, compression, or artificial lift.
  • Proficiency in Ladder Logic, Structured Text, and Function Block Diagram programming.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, P&ID drawings, cause and effect matrix documents, and control narratives.
  • Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills related to instrumentation, industrial networking, and PLC-based control systems.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to work with field personnel and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and operate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices, management of change processes, and control system documentation standards.
  • Familiarity with HMI or SCADA systems. Experience with Ignition is preferred but not required.

Preferred Qualifications/ Experience

 

  • Experience with additional PLC systems or distributed control systems such as Siemens, Honeywell, or DeltaV. 
  • Knowledge of oil and gas operational standards, process safety practices, and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Certifications in PLC programming, industrial automation, controls engineering, or OT cybersecurity.
