ExxonMobil's state-of-the-art campus north of Houston serves as home to its Upstream, Product Solutions and Low Carbon Solutions businesses and their associated service groups. The facility opened in 2014 and accommodates more than 10,000 employees and visitors.

What role you will play in our team

 

  • Champion Optical Spectroscopy technologies and its advanced applications for R&D and business.
  • Solve problems in energy industry using advanced Optical Spectroscopy techniques.
  • Assist research programs involving the molecular characterization of complex mixtures using primarily Optical Spectroscopic methods.  
  • Under limited supervision, safely performs advanced optical spectroscopic analysis of petrochemical feeds, intermediates, products, and catalysts using complex instrumentation and/or advanced techniques.
  • Independently conduct sophisticated analytical tests following non-standard analytical procedures with minimal guidance, all per quality and controls requirements.
  • Sample analysis may include but is not limited to: hydrocarbons, catatalysts,  source rock extracts, and crude oils.  
  • Assist development of analytical methods, meet project deliverables, evaluate data, and install and troubleshoot laboratory instruments/data.
  • Maintain, service, calibrate and repair equipment and instruments based on knowledge of equipment, instrument operation, and experimental requirements.
  • Compile, summarize, analyze, interpret and report experimental / test data and information with understanding of broad research objectives.

 

About you

 

Skills and Qualifications 

 

  • Possess a B.S. with 5 years’ experience or M.S. degree in chemistry or related field.
  • Prior experience with Optical Spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR, Raman, Fluorescence, UV-Vis) including analyses, data processing and instrument maintenance.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow proper lab procedures.
  • Willingness to be involved in research that is highly exploratory in nature and may support programs within division and affiliate organizations.
  • Good communication skills for understanding and describing scientific observations, experimental plans and results, equipment and material design concepts.
  • Ability to quickly learn new tasks and integrate them into workflows.
  • Organized, punctual, and takes full responsibility for laboratory procedural compliance and safe laboratory operations including equipment maintenance, chemical and supply ordering, chemical inventory, safe handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals.
  • Effective in a team working environment, enjoys challenges, and committed to lifelong learning.

 

Preferred Qualifications/ Experience

 

  • Knowledge of optical spectroscopic technologies such as IR, Raman, Fluorescence and UV-Vis.  Familiarity of the following sampling techniques: reflections, transmission, heated ATR, in-situ ATR, in-situ Raman, in-situ DRIFT, & Photoacoustic spectroscopy.

  • Knowledge of related microscopy techniques (IR, Raman and Fluorescence) is a plus.

  • Application of advanced software tools (database searching e.g. Know-It-All).

  • Knowledge of Chemometric modeling is a plus.

  • Programming or scripting skills for data automation (Python) is a plus.
