Marine Engineer

Job Summary:

 

• Serve as subject matter specialist on the design, construction, maintenance and repair of the machinery systems (propulsion, power generation and distribution, cooling and lubrication, cargo handling, etc.) typically found aboard marine vessels and floating offshore terminals (e.g. FPSOs).
• Support Upstream and Downstream affiliates in the stewardship of chartered vessels (tankers, LNG carriers, offshore support vessels, etc.) and owned/operated floating production systems.  Provide technical solutions to problems related to the design, operation, repair, and overhaul of vessel machinery systems.
• Primary work location is Houston, Texas, with potential business travel worldwide (ashore and/or offshore).  Temporary relocation (up to three years) for career development assignments overseas is possible. 

Primary Job Functions:

 

Primary job functions can vary with specific assignments, but may include:
• Sustain ExxonMobil’s culture of safety and support compliance with established safety management systems for our fleet of floating assets.
• Maintenance planning and support – provide technical assistance to maintenance activities for marine assets, including equipment inspection and testing, fitness-for-service assessments, work package preparation, shutdown planning and risk assessments, and coordination of contractor resources at vendor facilities and aboard ExxonMobil owned and chartered assets.
• Monitor marine systems discipline studies during all FPSO / FPU engineering design stages for major projects (including technical, costs, planning, interfaces, reporting). Identify optimization opportunities in the early design stages.
• Engineering design review and construction oversight – review third party designs for compliance with mission requirements, regulations, and industry standards; participate in HAZOP, oversee vessel construction, conversions and overhaul activities, including factory acceptance testing and sea trials as applicable.
• Troubleshooting and incident investigation – support machinery surveillance activities, troubleshooting efforts, and root cause failure analyses.
• Perform fitness for service assessments associated with marine machinery systems, develop mitigation plans and engage in regulatory for continued service plan regulatory approvals.
• Data analysis related to machinery and vessel performance – conduct vessel-specific and fleet-wide studies of vessel operating parameters (power, fuel consumption, etc.) in order to ensure compliance with company standards and to identify optimization opportunities.

Job Requirements:

 

B.Sc., B.E. or equivalent in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Naval Architecture w/ courses including but not limited to mechanical engineering, machinery design, fluid systems, thermodynamics / heat transfer and marine electrical technology; a M.Sc., M.E. or equivalent in any of these fields would be desirable.
• Minimum 5 years work experience in maritime or offshore operations; the preferred candidate will have experience in the design, construction, and management of marine vessels or FPSOs and their associated equipment and systems, including experience in both an operating organization and a design / construction / repair department.
• An STCW engineering license and/or operating experience aboard merchant vessels (tankers) or offshore facilities (FSO, FPSO) is desirable but not required.
• Strong analytical skills; ability to perform optimization based analyses and leverage data to drive effective business decisions.
• Familiar with the latest (marine) systems and equipment technology, evolving regulatory requirements with ability to develop functional specifications with good technical-commercial judgment.
• Strong knowledge of the regulations and standards commonly used in the marine vessel industry (IMO, classification society rules, etc.).
• Willing to travel internationally, on site and offshore when required; flexible and adaptable to various working and living conditions.
