ExxonMobil annually invests several billions of dollars both in establishing new facilities as in upgrading existing operations. As part of the worldwide ExxonMobil Project Management organization, local Project Management groups are responsible for project realization at ExxonMobil refineries and chemical plants. For the Project Management Department at the ExxonMobil Refinery and Chemical Plant in Rotterdam, we are looking for graduate engineers for project professional positions. Initially working locally, these roles offer opportunities for subsequent international assignments.

Job Role Responsibilities


For MSc or PhD Engineers with fluent Dutch language skills, ExxonMobil Netherlands is offering a career in our Projects Group. There are different positions to start in:

  • Project Engineer: responsible for over-all project coordination, managing the detailed engineering, contracting and procurement, setting up construction and ensuring safety and quality in execution.
  • Process Design Engineer: responsible for specifying new facilities that will meet the project objectives in the most economical way. Develops the Project Design Basis which is the starting point for Detailed Engineering by an Engineering Contractor. Follows up on design aspects throughout the execution phase of the project.
  • Cost & Schedule Engineer: responsible for estimating project costs and execution duration early on in the project development; and for controlling cost and schedule throughout the project execution phase.


A starting engineer will start in one of the above roles. In the first couple of years an engineer will also be offered the opportunity to develop in various project roles in order to develop into a broadly skilled project professional. Alternatively, there are also opportunities to specialize in a certain project discipline and develop into an expert for that discipline.

While initial roles are typically performed at the local organization where the engineer was hired, opportunities for assignments on international projects can subsequently be offered.

Expected Level of Proficiency


Language skills: Fluent in English & Dutch.
Preferred education: MSc in chemical- , mechanical- , electrical- , civil- , aerospace engineering, petroleum/geoscience engineering or applied physics.
Preferred universities: Delft, Eindhoven, Twente. Additional PhD is not required; however candidates holding a PhD are welcome to apply.
