Laboratory Technician

Job Role Summary

This position is for a Laboratory Technician in ExxonMobil Research and Engineering.  Assignments may include work in the Lubricants and Grease Testing Group, Fuels Testing Group, Analytical Sciences and Blending Laboratories.

Job Role Responsibilities

The position will be required to execute the following responsibilities under general supervision (may vary depending on specific work assignment):

  • Proactively maintain the safety and security of the work area, yourself, and your co-workers
  • Independently conduct sophisticated analytical tests following established methods, and non-standard analytical procedures with guidance, all per quality and controls requirements
  • Assist development of analytical methods, meet project deliverables, conduct internal and external audits, evaluate statistical quality control data, and install and troubleshoot laboratory instruments/data
  • Provide experimental expertise including routine and non-routine data analysis and interpretation
  • Coordinate sample receipt, movement, proper storage and retention
  • Maintain a high technical quality standard by meticulously following procedures and ensuring strict compliance with data integrity principles (accurate records/measurements/calibrations, etc.) 
  • Maintain, service, calibrate and repair equipment and instruments based on knowledge of equipment, instrument operation, and experimental requirements
  • Prepare aliquots, solutions, standards, materials/chemicals for analysis and experimentation
  • Conduct bench top (lab) and research (blend plant/pilot) blending of lubes, fuels, greases including large quantities in non-temperature controlled environments
  • Compile, summarize, analyze, interpret and report experimental / test data and information with understanding of broad research objectives.
  • Support daily laboratory operations including maintaining chemicals and supplies, documentation, housekeeping, and maintain effective working relationships with site staff.
  • Support laboratory administrative activities
  • Complete chemical handling requiring physical labor

Job Requirements

  • Position will have initial assignment in Paulsboro, N.J., but will be permanently relocated to Clinton, NJ, in 2018-2019 timeframe.   Applicant must be willing to work temporarily in Paulsboro and relocate to Clinton, N.J. as required.  
  • A Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in chemistry or related science field is highly desired.  
  • Candidates with an Associate’s degree in chemistry or related science and/or at least 5 years on-the-job experience as a technician in a petroleum, chemical research laboratory, or production facility will also be considered.  
  • Formal laboratory technician training courses and a good understanding of basic petroleum technology is preferred.
  • The ability to work in production and laboratory settings with minimum supervision while following safe work practices at all times.
  • The ability to lift a minimum of 40 pounds, manipulate 55 gallon drums, wear a respirator as needed, and wear fire resistant clothing as needed.
  • Hours are generally day work but flexibility is required to accommodate workflow.  Overtime and travel may be required.
  • Willing to attend training on new instruments and equipment, either on-site or at a manufacturer’s site.

Expected Level of Proficiency

  • Strong safety awareness and adherence to standards and practices working with advanced instrumentation in a chemical laboratory; ability to identify potential safety issues and propose solutions.
  • Strong computing skills, including experience with word processing, spreadsheets, presentation packages, chemistry software, instrument automation, sample tracking and data handling.  
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal, and communication skills, including flexibility to accommodate change, positive attitude, and willingness to mentor/train other personnel working in a diverse and inclusive environment
  • Strong organizational skills with effective time and task management, even for repetitive tasks. 
  • Strong work ethic with ability to quickly learn new tasks and integrate them into workflows; ability to meticulously follow detailed instructions and adhere to complex procedures.
