About Mont Belvieu

Located just 33 miles east of the heart of Houston, the City of Mont Belvieu is home to nearly 10,700 residents and is the most important hub for natural gas liquids (NGLs) in the country. Strategically positioned at the intersection of SH 99 and I-10, Mont Belvieu is poised to be the destination city for the east side of the Houston-Galveston metro area. Despite the growth, the city still clings to its hometown feel; bringing together the best of big city amenities and small-town charm (https://www.montbelvieu.net/628/About-Our-Community).

In operation since 1982, ExxonMobil’s Plastics Plant in Mont Belvieu (MBPP) is a modern petrochemical manufacturing facility, specializing in polyethylene production. The plant is located on about 500 acres in Chambers County. In 2017, a major expansion project was completed to process ethylene feedstock at two new 650,000 tons per year high-performance polyethylene lines.

MBPP has roughly 250 employees with an average of 500 contract personnel. MBPP manufactures approximately 5 billion pounds of linear low-density and high-density polyethylene products each year, which are shipped via rail hopper cars or packaged for overseas transport.

ExxonMobil manufactures ExceedTM, EnableTM and Exceed XPTM performance polyethylene resin at MBPP, which utilizes proprietary technology. These resins are raw materials in high performance film solutions. They are key contributors to more sustainable packaging by reducing the amount of packaging material required. Typical film applications include food packaging, liquid packaging, heavy duty sacks, stretch and shrink films for bundling, hygiene films, trash bags, industrial liners and agricultural films.

MBPP also manufactures high density polyethylene (HDPE), which is a high molecular weight resin used in high performance packaging films, grocery bags, can liners, pipe and various blow-molded rigid containers. The Baytown area sites are highly integrated, which makes the plants and products more efficient as we develop technologies to make cleaner fuels and work together to operate more safely and reliably.
