For our European Technology Center in Brussels (Machelen), we are looking for a microscopy research scientist.

The job opening is in the Analytical Science department, part of the company Research organization. This department provides consultancy to R&D programs for all ExxonMobil Chemical business lines (Recycling, next generation feeds, advanced materials…). It develops customized analytical solutions for manufacturing sites and customer problem solving. The Microscopy Lab is equipped with optical microscopes, AFM, SEM, FIB-SEM and TEM, and sample preparation equipment such as microtomes. Even though the work is mostly materials science, candidates with a biomedical background are also encouraged to apply. 

Your job role responsibilities

  • Leadership and scientific expertise in microscopy to support R&D projects and problem solving
  • Technical Guidance of lab research technicians (2 to 3 technicians)
  • Scientific conference presentation and article publication, when appropriate
  • Active participation in developing Intellectual Property strategy with respect to Gas Chromatography 
  • External networking with academia to maintain technical leadership
  • Participation to the global Advanced Characterization Enterprise community of ExxonMobil company to maintain industry-leading characterization capabilities

For this role we are looking for candidates with

  • PhD in the field of material science or biology with in depth knowledge  and hands-on experience in microscopy 
  • Knowledge in polymers, heterogeneous catalysts, structured or porous materials would be a plus
  • High standards in safety, quality and ethics
  • Excellent computer skills 
  • Foster strong team dynamic in both local and global analytical teams
  • Excellent English language skills; Additional European languages will be a big advantage: Dutch, French, German, Italian, Spanish
  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills
