Tax Advisor - Excise and Customs

Job Role Summary

We are currently seeking a qualified and experienced Tax Advisor, specialising in excise and / or customs, to join our team of Tax specialists at our office in Leatherhead, Surrey.

Job Role Responsibilities

Tax Advisors are responsible for providing advisory and compliance services to ExxonMobil affiliates in the UK. The key responsibilities are to:

  • Provide advisory services on excise and customs including: monitoring legislative developments in relation to excise and customs; reviewing project proposals and contracts to ensure that excise and customs implications are identified and understood; and advising upon asset acquisitions and divestments  
  • Represent the Company on excise and customs matters including: in interactions with HMRC; audits; and at industry technical meetings
  • Provide technical support to Business Support Centre tax compliance staff
  • Support the Regional Tax Department in relation to excise and customs implications of new business initiatives and SAP system projects/upgrades
     

Expected Level of Proficiency

To be eligible for this role, you must:

  • Have completed a degree at bachelors or masters level and / or have completed relevant professional qualifications in accounting or tax.
  • Have a detailed knowledge of UK excise and European customs legislation.
  • Have relevant experience in an excise and / or customs advisory position, providing guidance to business clients and indirect tax compliance teams (four years+ as a guide). Candidates with less than four years’ experience, but who have a high degree of relevant professional experience will also be considered.
  • Have strong IT skills, specifically being an experienced and competent user of Microsoft Office – including Excel and Word. Experience with SAP is also preferable. 

 

Candidates should also have demonstrated work experience and / or knowledge of working with external parties, including HMRC. Experience of working in the oil and gas industry is not required.


Successful candidates should possess a broad range of personal effectiveness and leadership skills, with the ability to facilitate and influence business decisions in a team environment.

The first round of the interview process, which will be a telephone interview, will take place for selected candidates in early January. Successful candidates will then be invited to final round interviews at our Leatherhead office following this.
