What role you will play in our team

 

We are looking for an experienced Naval Architect / Marine technology development engineer to work at ExxonMobil’s Houston Campus in the United States of America.  The candidate would be part of ExxonMobil’s Global Upstream Technology Portfolio team and provide technology development and delivery to our Business Lines as well as to the Global Projects organization.  Skill areas of interest under this job title include floating and fixed structures, marine hydrodynamics, marine systems, marine integrity management, structural dynamics, offloading systems, station-keeping, riser dynamics, metocean, and marine transportation. Candidate will receive the appropriate training and opportunities to further learn and grow in order to have a successful long-term career at ExxonMobil.

What you will do

 

  • Guide development and/or qualification of new technologies for implementation in the field of marine engineering. 

  • Identify, qualify, and champion implementation of suitable emerging technologies in marine space to improve safety, drive competitiveness and step-changes in value realized.

  • Perform design verifications and fitness-for-service assessments of offloading systems, and advise Operations on residual risk, testing programs and equipment strategies.

  • Support marine integrity management and life extension activities; lead RCFAs and risk assessments related to hull, mooring, marine systems, offloading and marine operations.

  • Evaluate loads and responses of offshore structures (e.g. floaters, risers/umbilicals, offloading systems), taking into account key critical parameters and inter-disciplinary interfaces. 

  • Develop tools for performing floating systems condition, damage, and degradation assessments; evaluate system reliability and operational risks.

  • Provide advice / guidance on application of various industry codes and standards (e.g. API, ISO, ABS, DNV) and assessment methods; manage interfaces with Classification Societies and local regulators.

  • Monitor and provide engineering oversight of third-party engineering contractors and marine service providers to our Business Partners.

  • Review, interpret, and evaluate contractor-supplied design and engineering deliverables, guide contractor in selection of analysis tools and methodologies.

  • Sustain ExxonMobil’s culture of safety and support compliance with established safety management systems for our fleet of floating assets.

  • Support ExxonMobil’s vision to lead in the energy transition.

  • Mentor and guide less experienced marine engineers in the area of naval architecture and marine engineering.

About You

We are looking for someone who has a strong Naval Architect / Marine Technology background and has the following qualifications:

Skills and Qualifications

 

  • M.S. or Ph.D. degree in naval architecture, offshore engineering, ocean engineering or a related discipline (e.g. aerospace, structural) with 10+ years industrial experience.

  • Strong background in concept selection, engineering design, and project management.

  • Strong general knowledge of floating asset types (Spar, TLP, FPSO, FSO, FSRU, FLNG) – concept description, features, application, analyses, range and operations.

  • Strong background in fixed and floating structures, hydrodynamics, marine integrity management, structural dynamics, offloading systems, riser systems, metocean, and marine transportation. 

  • Good working knowledge in offloading system components design/operations, equipment strategies, and requirements for handling, inspection, maintenance and repair.

  • Good working knowledge of marine structures and hull structural response.

  • Good working knowledge of global riser analyses.

  • Familiarity with mooring strength and fatigue analyses for spread and turret moored systems, as well as with anchor types and geotechnical analyses.

  • Knowledge of marine systems. 

  • Working knowledge of codes, standards and practices and their application (e.g. ABS, DNV, API, ISO codes etc.).

  • Long-term interest in working in a technical role in naval architecture / marine engineering

  • Willing and able to travel, as required, for short periods to support specialized technical activities, potential for longer term assignments overseas.

  • Familiarity with dynamic concepts such as resonance, non-linear damping, coupled and un-coupled analyses, etc.

  • Familiarity with probabilistic and statistical design methods.

  • Familiarity in mathematical, statistical, and reliability analyses.

  • Familiar with FPSO and LNG carrier design, including: containment, gas/vapor management, safety and propulsion systems.

  • Experienced in numerical modeling and dynamic analyses of marine structural systems.

  • Software/programming (e.g. OrcaFlex, ANSYS AQWA, Flexcom, Python, Matlab, etc.).
