Job Role Summary


The Instrument Engineer position is responsible for providing technical support for the Company’s refineries and chemical plants globally. The successful candidate will have broad experience in Process Plant Instrumentation in a plant and/or project environment, experience with facilities design and planning of complex Instrumentation and control system including safety systems, and demonstrated effective leadership of Instrumentation projects and instrumentation support. This job will be located at the ExxonMobil Research and Engineering office in Spring, Texas. This position requires willingness to travel (approximately 20-30% of the time) to other locations for both office and field assignments.

Job Role Responsibilities


  • Providing I&CS leadership, coordination, guidance, and supervision for all phases of project work (planning, design, execution, and startup)
  • Serving as a resource to other disciplines in all phases of the capital project effort (e.g., provide consulting, safety system reviews, equipment strategy development, maintenance reviews, participation in Hazop reviews, etc.)
  • Providing Technical Assistance and Consulting (TAC) for I&CS to support the Refinery and Chemicals sites instrumentation issues, including Cold Eyes Reviews of Instrumentation projects, timely recommendations to resolve

          high priority site I&CS issues, and to provide support for turnarounds and startup activities

  • Utilizing all relevant Company processes, systems, standards to perform work; have safety mindset for all work   

Job Requirements


  • Minimum of BS in Engineering (Prefer Electrical, but will consider other Engineering Disciplines)
  • Relevant long term (6-8 yrs.) day-to-day manufacturing site engineering experience in Refining and or Petrochemicals 
  • Previous experience as an I&CS Engineer, Lead I&CS Design or Project Engineer on Major Instrument or Control System refinery or petrochemical project or similar role if day-to-day manufacturing site engineering experience is less than 6-8 years     
  • Familiarity with Industry Instrumentation standards (ISA, API, IEC, etc.)
  • Ability to execute complex instrumentation related assignments     
  • Previous Project experience
  • Willingness / interest to become a long term technical specialist 
  • Must be self-motivated and effective as a team member interested in providing customer focused support to projects and sites
  • Able to mentor team members and demonstrate leadership 
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Willing and able to travel both domestically and internationally (approximately 20 to 30%)
