Job Role Summary

We are currently seeking a qualified and experienced Chemical or Mechanical Engineer to join our Global Polymers and Finishing Technology Department, within ExxonMobil Chemical’s Technology Organisation, as a Process Technology Improvement Engineer for Butyl Finishing and Reslurry processes.


The position is located at Fawley Refinery and Chemical Plant. The largest refinery in the UK, Fawley is a combined refining, lubricants and chemicals manufacturing site which is located on the south coast of England, on the edge of the New Forest National Park.

Job Role Responsibilities

ExxonMobil Chemical’s Technology Organisation is responsible for identifying and implementing improvement projects that support business needs and the growth of production capacity.  The key responsibilities of the Process Technology Improvement Engineer are to:

  • Lead troubleshooting and resolution of the most complex butyl reslurry and finishing problems, including proactively identifying and helping to resolve emerging issues before they escalate.
  • Design and implement new technologies to improve the butyl reslurry and finishing processes, being a key contributor to process efficiency improvements, process capacity optimization, small capital project development, and new product/technology deployment. 
  • Leading teams tasked with solving more complex unit problems and participation in ExxonMobil Chemical‘s Global Reslurry and Finishing Process Technology network.
  • Mentoring and advising less experienced technical engineers


The successful candidate will work as part of an international team within the Global Polymers and Finishing Technology Department, primarily supporting the Fawley site. The Department is part of the broader ExxonMobil Chemical Technology organisation, which supports ExxonMobil’s worldwide chemicals businesses.

Expected Level of Proficiency

To be eligible for this role, you must:

  • Hold a degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or an equivalent subject
  • Be, or be working towards being, a Chartered Engineer, as defined by the Engineering Council or equivalent
  • Have relevant chemical and / or refinery operations experience and knowledge in the areas of manufacturing operations, process analysis and optimization (5 years+ as a guide), preferably including butyl finishing technology. Candidates with less than five years’ experience, but who have a high degree of relevant industry experience will also be considered
  • Have strong IT skills, specifically being an experienced and competent user of process modelling and data analysis tools.


Candidates should also have demonstrated work experience and / or knowledge of:

  • Providing chemical and / or mechanical engineering support on a day-to-day basis for unit operations, including trouble shooting plant operational events
  • Polymer / rubber manufacturing operations
  • Extrusion and finishing manufacturing; preferably rubber water slurry finishing processes
  • Supporting engineering teams on process analysis and optimisation of operating units, demonstrating examples of technical leadership
  • Application of chemical and / or mechanical engineering expertise to project design, development, execution and start-up in a refining or petrochemical environment
  • Polymer science, fluid mechanics, polymer rheology, engineering mechanics, solids handling, thermodynamics, and mass transfer


Candidates who do not have chemical and / or refinery operations experience, but whose experience is in other areas of industrial manufacturing, for example those utilising production lines in the automotive or food industries, will also be considered where they can demonstrate the general work experience and / or knowledge described above.


The role will likely involve domestic and international travel, including outside of Europe, (up to 20% of the time) for business trips.


Successful candidates should possess a broad range of personal effectiveness and leadership skills, with the ability to facilitate and influence business decisions in a team environment.

Successful candidates will then be invited to final round interviews, comprising both technical and competency based assessments, following this.
