Job Role Summary

We are currently seeking a qualified and experienced Process Control Applications Engineer to join our team at Fawley Refinery and Chemical Plant. The largest refinery in the UK, Fawley is a combined refining, lubricants and chemicals manufacturing site which is located on the South coast of England, on the edge of the New Forest National Park. Process Control Applications Engineers are responsible for developing on-line control applications to control operation of the process units, to maintain product quality and to maximise productivity.

Job Role Responsibilities

We are currently seeking a qualified and experienced Process Applications Engineer to join our team at Fawley Refinery and Chemical Plant. The largest refinery in the UK, Fawley is a combined refining, lubricants and chemicals manufacturing site which is located on the South coast of England, on the edge of the New Forest National Park.

Process Applications Engineers are responsible for developing on-line control applications to control operation of the process units, to maintain product quality and to maximise productivity. The key responsibilities are to:

  • Provide technical support to the Operations Department on process optimisation issues
  • Work closely with Process Technical teams to provide on-line control and optimisation applications consistent with unit economics, production targets and operating limits.  This will include development of new applications and modification of existing applications to meet the changing business requirements.
  • Provide support and training to the Operations Teams on control objectives and online control schemes
  • Develop continuous improvements to operator tools to support safe and effective operation of the process units

The role is based at our Fawley site, near Southampton, which is the largest and most technically complex refining and petrochemical facility in the UK.

The successful candidate will work with a small team of 6 engineers, which is part of the larger Fawley Area Engineering Service (FAES) Department. The FAES Department comprises of approximately 100 multidisciplinary engineers and technicians, and provides technical support across the Fawley refining and petrochemical facility.

Candidates should showcase personal determination, ability to work in teams and have the necessary communication skills to rise to Senior Technical Leadership status.  The Engineering Department at Fawley supplies technical support and project development services to manufacturing units, and comprises approximately 50 staff.  The organisation is looking to strengthen the existing team in support of new opportunities and plant automation projects. As a Process control applications engineer you would join a team of 6 engineers that cover all Chemicals operating units.  With ever changing economic demands, ongoing growth of the production capability, and continued development of control technology, there is a constant demand for online control applications which deliver the best performance from the process units.

Expected Level of Proficiency

To be eligible for this role, you must:

  • Hold an engineering degree in chemical engineering, or an equivalent subject.
  • Be, or be working towards being, a Chartered Engineer, as defined by the Engineering Council or equivalent. 
  • Have relevant experience developing and modifying on-line process control applications, preferably in a refining or petrochemical environment (five+ as a guide). Candidates with less than five years’ experience, but who have a high degree of relevant industry experience will also be considered.
  • Have strong IT skills, specifically being an experienced and competent user of Microsoft Office – including Excel and Word.

Desirable experience could include:

  • Hydrocarbon processing  in a refining and / or petrochemical environment
  • use of simulation tools (PRO-II or equivalent) for process optimisation
  • Honeywell DCS TDC3000 including CL, AM or HPM or Experion
  • An in depth knowledge of refining and petrochemical processes is preferred, but training will be provided.

Successful candidates should possess a broad range of personal effectiveness and leadership skills, with the ability to facilitate and influence business decisions in a team environment.
