Research Technician - Mass Spectrometry

Job Role Summary

Under limited supervision, safely performs advanced analysis of petrochemical feeds, intermediates, products, and catalysts using complex instrumentation and/or established techniques.

Job Role Responsibilities

The position requires the following (depending on work assignment) under general supervision:

  • Proactively maintain the safety and security of the work area, yourself and your co-workers.
  • Independently conduct sophisticated analytical tests following established methods, and non-standard analytical procedures with guidance, all per quality and controls requirements.
  • Assist development of analytical methods, meet project deliverables, evaluate data, and install and troubleshoot laboratory instruments/data.
  • Coordinate sample receipt, movement, proper storage and retention.
  • Ensure strict compliance with data integrity principles (accurate records/ measurements/ calibrations, etc.).
  • Maintain, service, calibrate and repair equipment and instruments based on knowledge of equipment, instrument operation, and experimental requirements
  • Prepare aliquots, solutions, standards, materials/chemicals for analysis and experimentation.
  • Compile, summarize, analyze, interpret and report experimental / test data and information with understanding of broad research objectives.
  • Support daily laboratory operations including maintaining chemicals and supplies, documentation, housekeeping, and maintain effective working relationships with site staff.
  • Support laboratory administrative activities.

Job Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry or a related science field with strong skills in the operation of mass spectrometry (MS) and chromatography technologies. 
  • A familiarity with various MS ionization methods is a plus, such as field ionization / field desorption (FI/FD), electrospray ionization (ESI), atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI), atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI), and matrix assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI).
  • Experience with R&D, laboratory operations, chemical handling and petroleum refining and petrochemical processes, as well as knowledge of inorganic and organic chemistry is desired.
  • Ability to work overtime (extended hours and/or weekends) to accommodate workflow.  This may include occasional business travel.

Expected Level of Proficiency

  • Strong safety awareness and adherence to standards and practices working with advanced instrumentation in a chemical laboratory; ability to identify potential safety issues and propose solutions.
  • Strong computing skills, including experience with word processing, spreadsheets, presentation packages, chemistry software, instrument automation, sample tracking and data handling.
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal, and communication skills, including flexibility to accommodate change, positive attitude, and willingness to mentor/train other personnel
  • Strong organizational skills with effective time and task management, even for repetitive tasks.
  • Strong work ethic with ability to quickly learn new tasks and integrate them into workflows; ability to meticulously follow detailed instructions and adhere to complex procedures.
