ExxonMobil Chemical Europe Inc. currently has a Research Scientist Infrared Spectroscopy position available in the Technology Organization, located at the European Technology Center in Brussels.

Job description

  • Daily guidance of infrared (IR) spectroscopy lab
  • Maintain high standards in safety and quality
  • Develop new/existing methods for characterization and problem solving
  • Train, mentor and direct work of technicians to ensure quality
  • Internal consulting to R&D/plants on characterization solutions to challenging problems
  • External networking with academia to maintain technical leadership
  • Active participation in patenting strategy with respect to IR spectroscopy
  • Foster strong team dynamic in both local and global ACD teams
  • Scientific conference presentation and article publication, when appropriate.


Job role requirements

  • PhD in analytical chemistry, polymer science or material science or equivalent
  • In-depth knowledge of vibrational spectroscopy and spectral interpretation of fine chemicals or polymers; ideally polyolefins, petrochemicals or catalytic materials
  • Strong practical/experimental and theoretical skills in at least two of the following:
    • IR for industrial R&D (identification/problem solving)
    • Quantitative IR (development/automation/validation)
    • IR microscopy (mapping/imaging)
    • Hyphenated IR techniques (TGA-IR or AFM-IR)
    • Statistics/chemometrics
    • Orientation by polarized IR
  • Ability to work:
    • Independently and in teams
    • Under pressure and to deadlines
  • Strong safety ethic, leadership, time management, appropriate attention to detail, analytical/conceptual thinking, efficient/effective mind-set, creative/innovative, goal orientated
  • Excellent 
    • IT skills (automation/programming)
    • Written/oral English
  • Preferred knowledge/experience
    • Industrial/ex-university experience with IR
    • Experience with other techniques:
      • Raman, UV-VIS, NIR, XRF or NMR
      • Chromatography, rheology, microscopy, surface science or elemental analysis
  • General organic/polymer chemistry
