Job Summary


A Metal Trades Technician is responsible for the repair of fixed equipment. Plant equipment includes, but is not limited to, drums, towers, heat exchanger and piping. Other tasks include welding and the shop operation of a drill press, hydraulic lift, forklift, overhead cranes, as well as field repairs.

Job Responsibilities


  • Understand and comply with all refinery safety procedures and policies.
  • Perform all tasks associated with fixed equipment repair and maintenance including but not limited to: disassembly, inspection, repair or replacement of parts, re-assembly, final installation and start-up.
  • Operate shop equipment associated with fixed equipment and other refinery equipment repairs (drill press, welding machine, etc.).
  • Physically inspect and monitor equipment and/or the work area.
  • Adjust equipment to meet operating specifications.
  • Maintain housekeeping in assigned areas according to refinery standards.
  • Perform work off of fixed, temporary or portable elevated platforms.


Job Requirements

  • Willing and able to work overtime as required.
  • A strong commitment to safety and quality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.


Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities


  • A minimum of 3 years mechanical experience or technical training preferred relating to the repair and maintenance of fixed equipment and welding.
  • Mechanical/maintenance experience in a refinery, chemical plant or other manufacturing plant.
  • Ability to read/interpret repair manuals and drawings.
  • Experience performing maintenance on all types of exchangers, drums and towers.
  • Experience operating shop equipment.
  • Basic rigging knowledge (has NCCO qualification).
  • Ability to weld on Carbon Steel and Alloy equipment.


Pre-Employment Testing Requirement

This Operations and Mechanical (O&M) position requires pre-employment testing. After applying you will receive a pop up giving you access to the assessment. You may take the assessment at that time or utilize the instructions below to access the assessment at a time convenient for you.  Note that the assessment must be completed by the deadline in order for you to be considered for the O&M position for which you have applied. 


  • The O&M test has been revised.  Effective December 1, 2021 ALL candidates must complete the revised assessment.  Even if you have tested within the last 365 days (passed or failed), you must complete the revised assessment to be considered for this O&M opportunity.  Failure to complete the assessment by the deadline will result in your disqualification from consideration for this position.  
  • Test passed candidates will be screened by the hiring team and a subset invited for interview.  Note that a satisfactory result on the assessment does not guarantee an interview.
