DAS Data Architect

Job Role Summary

Key Deliverables (Define/outline primary responsibilities)

• Objective:  Become the go-to person to provide guidance and direction on projects which require business data
• Develop a system-agnostic data architecture to support future Digital Transformation efforts while working to provide step change improvement in master data and foundational data sets and models for enhanced analytics:
o Create new master data to support business needs
o Develop foundational models to extend/enhance value chain analytics
o Streamline operations and data entry processes to ensure they are efficient
o Explore external data sets with vendors that provide competitive advantage
o Implement modern provisioning platforms to share data across the enterprise
• Assess new Projects, MVPs and Small Work Items (SWIs) to validate data design and architecture principles
• Engage through pro-active early discussion to determine correct system or data source (creating new or leveraging existing data set), aiming to accelerate project’s speed to market, reducing total cost and ensuring long-terms sustainability of new solutions
• Evaluate new/emerging technologies which enhance flexibility/agility of data architecture
o Data Dictionary, Data Catalog, Meta Data Management and Taxonomy/Ontology
o Master Data Management solutions (and support for APIs and Domain Services)
o Digital/Data Platform technologies
• Uses data knowledge to translate business requirements into data architecture/models which adhere to prescribed standards
• Analyze business processes and identify/implement improvement opportunities in the data space
• Leverage strong background in data, analytics and systems to manage complexity of tool integration
• Leverage project management skills to rapidly define, extract and deliver required data, working closely with Value Chain leadership, Digital teams, EMIT, Controllers and others
• Interface with Fuels & Lubes Value Chain Analytics teams to address data related needs
• Work with Data Foundation group for data sets under active governance (e.g., master, transactional)
• Work with EMIT to pursue efficient acquisition of internal and external data sources to support analytics and operational systems
• Maintain accountability for all appropriate Management Of Change aspects with respect to data

Scope (Impacts, success measures/metrics, position in the Value Chain)

• Position resides in Fuels & Lubes (F&L) Data, Analytics & Systems (DAS), under F&L Digital
• All F&L/Downstream systems across the Fuels and Lubes Value Chains

• Process Owners and other seniors leaders (i.e., L3/L4 level)
• Digital Transformation teams:  FVC, LVC & CST
• Internal to Data, Analytics & Systems organization
• Fuels & Lubes Value Chain Analytics (e.g., Analytics Advisors)
• Data Foundation Team (e.g., Data Quality/Governance Advisors)
• Data Operations Teams for Plant, Material, Customer, Pricing, etc.
• Process & Systems Group: System Support Supervisors/Advisors
• Controllers (e.g., FTP, Digital Strategy & Sustainment)
• EMIT (e.g., Data Science & Analytics, Architecture & Technology)

Preferred knowledge, skills and experiences

• Minimum 5 to 10+ years of experience in data design/architecture and strong willingness to continue learning
• Ambition to become a data professional: end-to-end business process understanding; deep system and data architecture knowledge and preferably with experience in a business operations role (or willingness to learn)
• Leadership: Strong interpersonal skills with ability to influence w/o direct authority; able to effectively interact with large and diverse user community
• Project management: Applies project management skills and principles to work activities to support execution and delivery of Projects, MVPs and SWIs.
• Strong background in data, analytics, systems and tools: good working knowledge of SAP database technologies (ERP, HANA, etc.) and related back-end and front-end data extraction tools
• Data Modeling, Provisioning and Master Data Management tools (knowledge or strong willingness to learn)
• Outward-looking and innovative: Ability to scan external market and benchmark competition within and outside of the oil industry, including new technologies and processes; relentlessly search for new competitive advantages
• Business analysis: Integrates business knowledge/judgment to support operations, analytics and projects
• Self-starter: Ability to determine next steps and action accordingly, working within/across "virtual teams"
