Job Role Summary

ExxonMobil Chemical Company is seeking candidates for a Research Scientist in the Microscopy and Surface Science Group located in Baytown, Texas.  The successful candidate for this position will become part of the Advanced Characterization Department (ACD) within the company's core research organization.  ACD is a global team with state of the art characterization capabilities around the world.  We have extensive capabilities in Atomic Force Microscopy, Electron Microscopy, Optical Microscopy, and Surface Science. Successful candidate will be expected to maintain high safety and quality standards through application of analytical skills, knowledge of materials, and fluency in microscopy.  He or she will also be expected to foster team collaboration with other analytical associates in techniques such as Vibrational Spectroscopy, X-ray scattering, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Rheology & Gel Permeation Chromatography.

Primary Functions

  • Use Atomic Force Microscopy and other advanced techniques to characterize:
    • morphology, dispersion, and nanomechanics of components in elastomer and semicrystalline polymer blends
    • crystal nanostructure of semicrystalline polyolefins
    • dispersion of fillers in polymer matrices
    • effects of deformation on the morphology and structure of polymer blends
  • Use characterization data to develop structure-property relationships in polymer systems
  • Extend understanding of AFM contrast mechanisms in polymers, particularly in bimodal imaging
  • Collaborate with external parties to develop new and extend existing AFM capabilities to maintain technical leadership and provide added value
  • Interact with ExxonMobil Research and Business to provide comprehensive characterization solutions to ExxonMobil projects
  • Invent, patent, present, and publish when appropriate

Job Requirements

  • Ph.D. in physics, materials science or chemistry
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct creative research (independently as well as collaboratively)
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with AFM imaging, interpretation, and sample preparation on polymer systems

Preferred Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Experience in advanced AFM techniques -
  • Bimodal AFM imaging
  • Contact Resonance
  • Nanomechanical analysis
  • Strong background in Materials Science and Engineering
  • Ability to use and develop software for image analysis
  • Experience in other advanced characterization techniques, particularly electron and optical microscopy
