Manufacturing Chemist

Job Role Summary

The Manufacturing Chemist is primarily responsible for the laboratory, including providing technical support for ASTM testing, meeting internal and external quality and audit requirements, and providing problem solving/troubleshooting support to manufacturing units.  The Manufacturing Chemist will be located in Baytown, TX and will manage the day-to-day business of the laboratory including, but not limited to, the following: interaction with manufacturing personnel and associated business support groups and providing technical and supervisory guidance to a small group of technicians and specialists.  The Manufacturing Chemist works under the direct supervision of a Laboratory Second Line Supervisor.

Primary Job Functions

  • Provide technical support for laboratory analyses following ASTM or company specific methods
  • Manage internal and external quality requirements for data generation and reporting
  • Primary contact for personnel requiring troubleshooting/problem solving support for manufacturing units
  • Focus on continuous improvement for analytical methodologies
  • Provide supervisory guidance to a small set of technicians and specialists
  • Assure compliance with controls and operations integrity management standards and requirements
  • Develop and maintain key performance indicators and metrics for supported operations

Job Requirements

  • Ph.D. in chemistry or M.S. with applicable work experience
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities and stakeholders
  • Proven ability to manage short deadlines and emergency situations
  • Strong understanding of chemical instrumentation and methodologies
  • Instrumentation / process troubleshooting
  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication
  • High degree of attention to detail

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Industrial lab experience in problem solving/troubleshooting manufacturing issues
  • Experience with specialized lubes and fuels certification tests
  • UV/vis and XRF spectroscopy
  • Titration instruments/software
  • Wet chemical analysis
  • LIMS experience
  • Probability and statistics
  • Familiarity with regulatory waste classification and disposal
