What role you will play in our team

An Instrument Technician is responsible for the repair of instrumentation at the Chemical Plant or Refinery

What you will do

• An Instrument Technician is involved in maintaining equipment, doing preventive maintenance and repair work at the Chemical Plant or Refinery
• Successful completion of the apprentice training program
• Focus on safely completing the job, ensuring equipment reliability
• Perform safe and reliable instrumentation equipment installation/repairs
• Read instrumentation, troubleshoot instrumentation equipment, use test equipment and understand instrumentation safety
• Design, repair and monitor of rotating equipment control and electrical supply systems
• Troubleshoot/maintain PLC systems
• Troubleshoot/maintain DCS systems
• Read loop drawings, instrumentation drawings, specification sheets; to install, troubleshoot, and maintain control systems
• Read loop drawings, electrical drawings, specification sheets; to install, troubleshoot and maintain systems for monitoring and controlling rotating equipment
• Read loop drawings; electrical drawings, specification sheets, vendor manual data; to install, troubleshoot, and maintain digital systems
• Operate test equipment and perform calibration, repair or maintenance of equipment control and monitoring systems, including small piping, wiring and tubing
• Operate test equipment and perform calibration, repair, or installation of instrument, electrical, wiring, piping systems
• Operate test equipment and perform calibration, repair, or installation of digital systems and equipment
• Applies Complex policies and procedures
• Commitment for health and safety of self, others and the surrounding communities and for the protection of the environment
• Qualified in the Instrument Technician craft with knowledge of how other crafts affect Instrument Technician work and the overall job

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

• Experience with PLCs, Coriolis Meters, Tankage Instrumentation, Ultra Sonic Meters, Bentley Nevada Equipment, Pneumatics systems and various models of Honey Well TDC.
• Proficient in following manaufctures guidelines and competent in problem solving and trouble-shooting 
   

Summary of Instrument Apprentice Program
ExxonMobil has an apprenticeship agreement with the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, U.S. Department of Labor, between the Company and the person employed as an Instrument apprentice. The term of apprenticeship will be for three years.  Upon satisfactory completion of the requirements of the program, each apprentice is presented with a Certificate of Completion.
 
The Instrument Apprentice program includes minimum or 432 hours of formal instruction and skills laboratory instruction. The class and lab program includes programmed instruction, lectures, demonstrations, laboratory exercises, slide-tape presentations, video tape recordings, workbook exercises, hands-on practice exercises, written tests, and performance tests.  The skills laboratory is a supervised, hands-on activity within which the apprentice actually participates in applying and/or practicing the facts, principles, theory, and safety aspects related to the particular subject or skill being studied.
 
The apprentices are given field and/or shop work assignments that permit them to develop proficiency and self-confidence in applying the theory and principles and safety aspect of the trade in order to install and maintain machinery type equipment satisfactorily at the Baytown facility.
 
During the three years of the apprenticeship program, the Instrument apprentices will be tested at appropriate, frequent intervals to determine their job knowledge and skills for continuing in the program. The Instrument apprentices will have several performance reviews.  Instrument apprentices who are disqualified because of their inability to pass the training requirements satisfactorily will have their employment with the Company terminated.

Pre-employment Testing Requirement

This Operations and Mechanical (O&M) position requires pre-employment testing. After applying you will receive a pop up giving you access to the assessment. You may take the assessment at that time or utilize the instructions below to access the assessment at a time convenient for you.  Note that the assessment must be completed by the deadline in order for you to be considered for the O&M position for which you have applied. 
    
IMPORTANT

The O&M test has been revised.  Effective December 1, 2021 ALL candidates must complete the revised assessment.  Even if you have tested within the last 365 days (passed or failed), you must complete the revised assessment to be considered for this O&M opportunity.  Failure to complete the assessment by the deadline will result in your disqualification from consideration for this position.  

Test passed candidates will be screened by the hiring team and a subset invited for interview.  Note that a satisfactory result on the assessment does not guarantee an interview.
