Job Role Summary

ExxonMobil Chemical Company is seeking candidates for a Research Scientist in the Product Fundamentals Group located in Baytown, Texas.  The successful candidate for this position will become part of the Product Fundamentals Department (PFD) within the company's core research organization.  PFD is a global team pursuing fundamental research of polymeric materials and supported by state of the art characterization capabilities around the world.  Successful candidate will be expected to maintain high safety and research standards through application of structure-property relationships, analytical skills, knowledge of materials, and fluency in polymer physics concepts.  He or she will also be expected to foster team collaboration with synthetic chemists and analytical scientists.

Primary Functions

  • Use :
    • Polymer processing and finishing capabilities
    • Structure-property relationships for commodity polymer products
    • DoE to enable future product design
    • Advanced characterization capabilities and / or mechanical testing to advance knowledge and drive project decisions
  • Collaborate in global and cross-disciplinary research to develop new and extend existing capabilities to maintain technical leadership
  • Identify and acquire capital equipment/technology required to scale-up products from laboratory/pilot scale to commercial applications
  • Invent, patent, present, and publish when appropriate

Job Requirements

  • Ph.D. in polymer physics, materials science, chemical engineering or chemistry
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct creative research (independently as well as collaboratively)
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Creativity in forming and testing critical hypotheses to assist in new polymer materials development

Preferred Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Experience in process oriented concepts-
    • Morphology-property relationships of semi-crystalline polymers
    • Mechanics (e.g. fracture mechanics and failure analysis)
    • Rheology-processing-property behavior and relationships of semi-crystalline polymers
  • Experience in polymer physics concepts, both experimental and theoretical, including -
    • Relationship between polymer microstructure and dynamic behavior
    • Thermodynamics of polymeric systems
    • Rheological behavior of semi-crystalline and elastomeric materials
    • Crystallization behavior of semi-crystalline polymers
  • Strong background in Materials Science and Engineering and/or polymer physics (experimental/theoretical)
  • Hands on experience with polymer processing equipment (e.g. blown film and extrusion processing)
  • Understanding of polymer synthesis methods and analytical characterization techniques
  • Experience in advanced characterization techniques, such as thermal analysis, rheology, scattering and microscopy methods
