Job Role Summary


ExxonMobil Research and Engineering has an immediate opening for a Member of the Technical Staff in the area of Computational Catalysis at its Corporate Strategic Research (CSR) laboratory located in Annandale, New Jersey. ExxonMobil’s Corporate Strategic Research laboratory is a dynamic and exciting place to work with over 200 Scientists and Engineers conducting fundamental research related to ExxonMobil’s Upstream, Downstream, and Chemical businesses where interdisciplinary research is the norm. It features state-of-the-art analytical and support facilities, and international staff covering a broad range of scientific disciplines, and close ties with academic institutions and national laboratories. CSR is located in scenic Western New Jersey, about an hour west of New York City and 45 minutes northwest of Princeton. Job Role Responsibilities


Candidates are sought to fill a position in the area of catalysis with an emphasis on the use of quantum chemical calculations for the modeling of catalytic systems. 


  • The successful candidate should be proficient in performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations to understand the performance of catalytic materials
  • A demonstrated ability to test structure–property hypotheses of catalytic materials by establishing a detailed understanding of chemical conversion pathways through molecular modeling is required
  • Ability to work with Experimental Scientists to construct realistic models of catalytic systems and have some background in the simulation of experimental results
  • Familiar with tools for automation of calculation for both the creation of molecular models and the rapid analysis of large data sets
  • Have a strong background in the use of machine learning tools for data-driven design of catalytic materials
  • Experience utilizing the results of DFT calculations to build microkinetic models or kinetic Monte Carlo simulations is appreciated
  • Additional experience in electrochemistry, electrocatalysis and electrochemical interfaces is desirable

Job Requirements


  • The successful candidate will be expected to develop and demonstrate scientific leadership, build strong and productive collaborations internally and with outside research organizations, and contribute to internal and external scientific publications
  • Excellent communication skills are essential as collaboration with other science areas such as Materials Science, advanced characterization, and process engineering is critical for success
  • A Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or related fields is required (candidates at all levels of experience will be considered)
